Where did all the primers go?

Post by apache » 22 Apr 2009, 09:46

I have not been able to find any small rifle or small pistol primers anywhere. I have had a backorder with Cabela's Since February. I know the panic out there, but primers seem to be the only thing I can not get with some effort. Any idea's or info on availability anywhere?

People have been buying ammo and components like mad, good luck finding them. Might try http://www.powdervalleyinc.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I spoke to a nice lady at Grafs a while back and said, "I've just been watching your website expecting them to come back into stock for the last three months but they haven't yet. Are you unable to get them, or are you only able to fill back-orders and not list them as stock?"

She said all incoming shipments go to fill back orders, so I might want to get in line. Expect 3-4 month delay.

I have been checking pretty much all the shops within 100 miles of home, have been finding boxes here and there. :)

i'm not big on running around yard sales - the few I have gone to had crap and never got back into that...some folks truly find treasures, though....

The only thing that has been available over the last couple months other than shotshell primers have been a few K small pistol primers here and there. When Ryan says they aren't out there he means it, nationwide.

I would suggest backordering from smaller places, Sinclairs came through for me big time last time Winchester Small Rifles were scarce. I backordered 20k(for myself and a couple other people) and i got them all before anywhere else was taking new orders for them, i think they only got a total of 30k in at that time but nobody else had thought to backorder from smaller fish, at least small primer fish :)

I think they disappeared into my basement, and yours, and everyone elses.

I have not seen any for about three months now. I'm glad I bought some when I did.

I can't find .22 shells either. Or... reloading bullets. I have had a backorder through MidwayUSA since Christmas of last year for .38 special Gold Dot bullets.

Yeah, lock up your stuff. Every year during the fishing opener the Woodbury Fishing Widows sell all their husbands' shit at a giant community garage sale.
And yes, I will shamelessly buy it. :D

I have a good supply of 22lr. It's what I will be shooting this year because I won't be able to afford to replenish my stash if I shoot it.

Thats why you by 1-10K at a time! I cant remember the last time i've seen small rifle primers. Maybe at a gun show? Occasionaly I can get Small Pistol Magnum primers...which ought to work well enough for 5.7x28. Unfortunately the day I went to do my grand "primer experiment" and see what effect various primer types and brands had on True Blue loads, my chronograph decided to mess with me and throw out all sorts of weird numbers....(I have since learned not to use the diffusers on cloudy/rainy days) :(

SS197 is easier to find than primers, so I just use those for virgin brass/primers when I can. It also gives me the confidence that my reloads will keep for a long time and they wont blow out as easily since they are crimped in...

I've actually had a hard time getting my Chrony to read anything out of the FsN or PS90 reliably, its super weird considering its worked fine on anything in .223

But yes, both primers and 22lr should be purchased in bulk :) Best deals that way :thumb:

ive learned that you need to stand back several feet so the blast wave doesnt affect the reading. Also, the diffusers need to be removed in low light conditions. Painting bullets black is supposed to help as well.

Good info guys, thanks. I was wondering if the manufactures had interrupted production... compared to just a demand issue.

Last weekend, I went to the COTW Gunshow in Sandy, Utah to see if I could find some small rifle primers. There was one guy there selling them for $70/1000. I laughed and walked away.

I still manage to find a box of small pistol primers here and there, but I haven't been able to find small rifle primers since the election.

CCI #35 for 50BMG has been showing up here and there, but that doesn't help for all the other much more common stuff.
