Subsonic question

Post by wmvdg123 » 02 Jun 2015, 19:14

Great forum!

Just another CCW who would like to protect his family or others in the rare instance of a BG with half a brain who purchases body armor off ebay.

It seems besides S4M, T6, or SS190 there are not any rounds that will reliably pass though IIIa. It seems that even the hottest reloads only reach ~2200 FPS which is not enough for some IIIa body armor.

However, SB193 Subsonic 55gr FMJ easily passes through.

Why not just load 55gr FMJ as it passes through body armor and would be safer and easier for self defense?

Don't get me wrong, I would love to buy some S4M, but would like a way to reliably, safely reload a round for self defense.

Thanks!

All over our Self Defense rounds go through lvlIIIa from the pistol at 20 feet.

We have many loads that exceed 2200fps.

55gr FMJ is to heavy for the 5.7x28mm since the 5.7 needs speed to work.

FMJ for Self Defense? FMJ in any round/caliber for Self Defense pretty much boarders on stupid.

Thank you for Jay. I'm planning on buying a bunch of your ammo when it becomes available. Do you feel there are any reloads that could approach the low end of your defensive ammo and go through a IIIa or would you say that its only realistic to buy them?
Thanks for all your posts throughout the forums!

Not sure since when you start using 1x brass different people have different results.

Our stuff all uses virgin brass and this is why. Every gun treats the brass differently when it shoots it. This is why some reloads work perfect for one guy and then when some one else's uses the same exact load and recipe they have issues.

Sign up for the E-Blast. It sells out so fast just checking every now and again will mean you will miss it.

hey Jay, I saw that you posted elsewhere that you might be able to get about 5 reloads before the brass is dead . Since subsonics use a lot less powder, almost 50% less do feel that they would be able to be reloaded more times then a traditional high velocity round?

I know you can get more than five out of subsonic brass, I have quite a few that are on 7 or 8.

I know a guy getting 6 loads from hot stuff. Think it's all about shoulder movement. My new barrel spits out brass with necks that are very short, I'm expecting much shorter brass life.
