Cali the land of fruits and nuts w/lots of awesome fishing..

Post by Abalone » 15 Jul 2013, 13:44

Well living in California can be a challenge to say the least.
The disconnect people have from the natural bounty that surrounds them has always surprised me.
From foraging for wild edibles, mushrooms, wild game, and fish there is no end to the awesomeness California has for those willing to chase after it.
You also have to be willing to deal with CA's inhabitants, and I don't mean the wildlife.
2013 has been a banner year for my family and we will be eating good for months to come.
Hear are a couple of pics from the last few weeks.
Figured this part of the forum has had little activity and as a new FH Five Seven owner I have little to offer in the other forum topics.
Enjoy...

Contrary to popular belief, you CAN fix stupid - it's just illegal.

Also, gorgeous knife.

You have proper licenses for that bounty? I'll stick Wild Justice on ya. ;)

Nice catches.

I use pretty much the same recipe but just make sure to do a light rinse on my fish after it comes out of the brine.

Do I have the proper licenses to do this kind of fishing?
YES. In California a small violation in fishing regs could cost you hundreds to thousands of dollars and your fishing/hunting rights for an entire year, as well as your right to hunt/fish in other states for that said year. Not worth it.
Our ocean fishing reg book is over 100 pages and that does not include fresh water.
If you are confused about a reg, don't try to call Fish and Game, as you will never reach a warden.
Best you can do is leave a message and hope someone calls you back.
However, screw up and use a barbed hook while fishing for salmon, mooch instead of troll for salmon in one our new State Marine Conservation areas, fish on a Monday for Salmon in July (no really Monday & Tuesdays are closed for part of June and July but no other months), and you will find yourself paying a hefty fine while risking your fishing/Hunting rights for the next year.
If you thought CA was screwed up based on our gun laws you would be missing all the other stupid fun that makes this place akin to an insane asylum.
I spend almost as much time on the water as I do investigating the new regulations that come out each year.
Rant over, I have a smoked salmon salad to eat :p

Thanks. Great website. Going to try it with Scottish farm-raised salmon from Earth Fare (local "organic" market).
