SCAR17 vs ? Competition
Since the 17 came out, many mfg and those that were already developing their .308 platforms seemed to mimic the SCAR 17 designs and ergonomics. I say seemed, because I cannot ultimately prove it factually. However, it is quite apparent in many mainstream rifles chambered in 5.56 and even .308 that have been released in the last few years.
For those of you ready to jump on the "More is better!" bandwagon, I'm pointing out the fact that some think competition is good(though irrelevant, since FN bbl. quality is above most of the other companies releasing rifles that may compete with the 17).
Check out the Robinson Arms .308 model rifle, announced as SHOT and shipping in Feb.
http://xcr.robarm.com/xcrm.php" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Look familiar?
While alternatives and competition to the SCAR 17 carbine exists, it is hard for many mfg's to reach the quality that FN has over its barrels and parts, not to mention extensive T&E. Even with exhaustive T&E, many mfg's still release carbines that are sub-par for actual outdoor dynamic shooting, not just static range benchrest shooting. Many "extremely reliable" guns often fail when shot in less-than-perfect-lab-like conditions and dynamically.
Just something to think about! :cya:

Re: SCAR17 vs ? Competition
I picked up a SCAR 17s last week. I wonder if all those competitors will also achieve the FN performance pinnacle on delivering mags for their platforms?

:laugh: I had to laugh at that. Pretty witty.
Personally, I would got with a 2800 dollar custom billet AR piston. But that is just me. Guaranteed .5-.75 MOA at 500 yards and no problem with mags :thumb:
But I am not interested in a 308. If I went AR-10, I would go 6x47 Lapua or even 243 first.

Re: SCAR17 vs ? Competition
I would, too, Irish.
You're guaranteed quality and MOA.
The only thing that the AR would lose to the SCAR is in weight and a foldable stock. When I sling the rifle behind me with the stock folded, it allows more mobility. I'm sure users that are 6 foot and taller have no issue.
But the accuracy is what's keeping me from committing to a SCAR.
Blaster, you mind shooting a group at 300 with match ammo to test the accuracy?

Re: SCAR17 vs ? Competition
for this SCAR/Custom .308 AR price range of around 2500-3k, I would get a JP. JP custom .308 > All AR's.fd57 wrote:Competion: LMT's .308 Modular Weapon System. Thoughts?
Have shot LMT's, they...work.

Which model LMT did you test/use?
Just looking at JP now. Why JP preference over LMT? Feel free to PM instead if you like.

Re: SCAR17 vs ? Competition
Apparently JP is the name brand custom billet 308 right now, but there are others out there for a few hundred less, that shoot just as well. Great guns for sure though. I shot one last weekend with the manager of the gun shop I frequent. They are selling them now. That 308 you wanted, they had Blue.

JP barrels and tech are what really sets them above everyone else. No matter how good the quality other mfg's try to reach with their bbls, it doesn't matter because the tech sets them apart.

Mike sent me this link to the Geissele SCAR 17 trigger on Midwayusa:
http://www.midwayusa.com/product/567486 ... tage-matte" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
It's only $400 but there's a paper that comes with it that guarantee it will make you feel better about yourself and sleep better at night.

Re: SCAR17 vs ? Competition
Their barrels are identical to most custom shops. They are either Krieger, battle in or similar quality. From there, receivers and piston systems are what matter. Still great rifles, but don't buy the marketing line. They all get their barrel blanks from the same place, and they all CNC mill their receivers to tightest tolerances. Most of it comes down to Erogos and how you like the feel. They all shoot about the same.
All comes down to personal preference. That JL did shoot very nice though.
I have a GA DMR on my Custom SI AR. Love it. It wasn't 400 though.
