.300 Blackout, I mean Whisper, I mean Fireball

Post by SpaceCoyote » 27 Jan 2011, 14:07

So AAC has brought the .300 Whisper back to life as the .300 Blackout (.300 BLK). They have submitted it to SAAMI and LOTS of firearms & ammo companies are gearing up for it.

For those that don't know it offer whisper quiet subsonic performance and supersonic performance on par with 7.62x39mm. All this with great AR platform functionality. Just google ".300 blackout" for a plethora of info.

I for one am pretty excited about it. I've been intrigued by the .300 whisper for a while but was not up to the task of forming my own brass and other fun aspects of wildcat gun ownership. That may be okay for a bolt gun that gets 20 rnds per year but not a semi auto.

Any thoughts?

It's got my ears perked up too, but I still haven't figured out if I would want an AR upper or a bolt gun.

The ammo isn't cheap, but 220gr SMKs are cheap either. I think the supersonic remington loads are going to be around $.60 a round, so buying a few hundred of those would allow reloading of subsonic ammo for substantially less.

Remington is kinda in a tough spot on this I think, if they release brass in any substantial quantity the caliber will gain traction, but their own ammo sales won't be as high. I have a feeling they are going to milk it while they can for a couple years then open it up.

I saw this a year or so ago when they were in development of it (I think it was a press release?)

Other than the advantage of using it suppressed and it being extremely quiet, I couldn't really see the point of this round when you can get a .308. So it basically markets to the suppressed AR/semi/bolt crowd. Does that sound accurate, Space? (Good to see you around, bro)

Brass has already been released as far as I know. It can also be formed from 223 so there is plenty of options.

It also markets to the 6.8 SPC crowd. It has similar ballistics but uses .223 mags and bolt. It is also ALOT easier/cheaper to get brass for. The 300BLK has been out for a long time, it was just called 300 whisper when JD Jones created it.

The nice thing about standards is that there are so many to choose from...

But seriously, I think the 300BLK is a good thing. I've always been intrigued by the Whispers, and taking the 300 Whisper mainstream (by speccing it so that it will work in multiple common platforms) should be a win.

The 300 whisper which I might add is really damn quiet with the stopping power of a 45 cal at 100 yds. A real sub sonic power house..................You must get one!!!! :agree:

300 AAC Blackout (.300BLK) 7.62×35mm Heavy Supersonic/Subsonic Rifle Cartridge for Military Special Operations Applications: Will it Fly?
On October 24, 2010, in Ammunition, Featured, Personal Defense Weapons, Rifles And Carbines, Special Operations, Suppressors, by David Crane

defrev (at) gmail (dot) com

October 24, 2010

Back on September 29 (2010), Rob Silvers from Advanced Armament Corp. (AAC) sent DefenseReview (DR), The Firearm Blog, Military Times, and pretty much everyone else (and their mother) an email on the new 300 AAC Blackout (.300BLK) 7.62×35mm supersonic/subsonic rifle cartridge. Unfortunately, we didn’t have the time to write and publish this article before we left on our trip to Paris (France). So, we’re publishing it, now.

The 300 AAC Blackout cartridge would appear to be Advanced Armament Corp.’s (AAC) take on the .300 Whisper cartridge, a tactical wildcat cartridge developed by SSK Industries, only with the addition of lighter-weight supersonic bullet variants/options to provide a broader tactical mission profile.

Introduced at Modern Day Marine 2010, the 300 AAC Blackout silent cartridge gives you a choice of a 123gr (123-grain MC 300BLK) Hornady, 155gr (155-grain OTM 300BLK), or 220gr OTM (Open-Tip Match) subsonic bullet, depending on what kind of tactical problem one needs to solve with extreme prejudice.

The delivery device comes in the form of an M4/M4A1-type 9” AR SBR/PDW (Short Barrel Rifle/Personal Defense Weapon) upper receiver, which delivers the 300 AAC Blackout round to the target with energy that, according to AAC, matches the ballistics of the 7.62×39mm Russian round out of an AK (AK-47/AKM) with the 123gr load, and offers 37% more energy to target than the M855 ball 5.56×45mm NATO (5.56mm NATO) round. In his Military Times GearScout piece, “Stickman” implies that the 300 AAC Blackout cartridge’s ballistics are equivalent to a highly-supersonic 62gr M855 5.56×45mm NATO (5.56mm NATO)/.223 Rem. round out of a 16” barrel.

AAC has also developed the AAC 762-SD-N-6 silencer/sound suppressor/”muzzle can” as part of the 300 AAC Blackout loadout package.

While “Stickman” over at Military Times GearScout seems pretty gung-ho on the 300 AAC Blackout cartridge, Defense Review is reserving judgement until we can gauge U.S. military operator feedback on it. We’ll rely on our U.S. Army Special Forces (SF) and other U.S. military Special Operations (SPECOPS) contacts to determine the 300 AAC Blackout’s viability for U.S. military SF and SPECOPS mission profiles compared to the latest heavy 5.56mm NATO “Optimized” rounds, 77gr MK262 Mod1 round, and 7.62mm NATO rounds, which are already in the supply chain. Military ammo supply chain logistics are always a problem for non-NATO cartridges.

The 300 AAC Blackout is a wildcat cartridge, and DR has seen a lot of wildcat cartridges come and go over the years. Even the 6.8 SPC (6.8×43mm SPC) and 6.5 Grendel, two pretty popular wildcat cartridges that have generated a significant level of interest in U.S. military special operations, law enforcement, and civilian tactical shooting circles, have seen relatively small-scale adoption and/or use compared to the 5.56mm NATO/.223 Rem. and 7.62×51mm NATO (7.62mm NATO)/.308 Win. cartridges. The .300 Whisper, by comparison, really went nowhere.

The good news for the .300 BLK cartridge is that it was created by AAC, which means it has the backing of Freedom Group, which is a pretty large and powerful organization. So, we’ll see how it does. Kudos to AAC for introducing a new tactical cartridge to the world and providing some more ballistic variety to the tactical weapons/ammo sandwich. DR always supports that.

Now for some additional info on the 300 AAC Blackout cartridge from the company’s website:

“Introducing the Advanced Armament Corp. 300 AAC BLACKOUT (300BLK). This system was developed to launch 30 caliber projectiles from the AR platform without a reduction in magazine capacity and compatible with the standard bolt.

Full power 123 grain ammunition matches the ballistics of the 7.62×39mm AK, has 37% more energy than 5.56mm M855, and 9% more than 6.8 SPC TAP 110. In fact, from a 9 inch barrel, the 300BLK has more muzzle energy than 5.56mm M855 from a 16 inch barrel. When 300 BLK is used in a 16 inch barrel, it has 23% more energy than 5.56mm M855 from a 16 inch barrel – with much higher-mass projectiles for a more dramatic effect on the target. Or choose subsonic cartridges for optimal use with a sound suppressor – 220 grain Sierra OTM (open-tip match) bullets vastly outperforms a 9mm MP5-SD in penetration and long range accuracy.

Due to the high efficiency of the cartridge, less powder is used than 5.56mm, which results in a rifle that is a comfortable to shoot – even with a short barrel.

Reloading dies available from Forster products, Reamers and headspace guages available from Pacific Tool and Gauge.

DESIGN OBJECTIVES:
- Create a reliable compact 30-cal solution for the AR platform
- Utilize existing inventory magazines while retaining their full capacity
- Create the optimal platform for sound and flash suppressed fire
- Create compatible supersonic ammo that matches 7.62×39 ballistics
- Provide the ability to penetrate barriers with high-mass projectiles
- Provide all capabilities in a lightweight, durable, low recoiling package
REASONS 7.62×39 WAS NOT CONSIDERED:
Extreme cartridge taper
- Reduces reliability of feeding in AR Magazines
- Reduces Magazine capacity
- Cartridge taper induces considerably higher bolt thrust-
exacerbating the AR Bolt’s weaknesses
- Requires a larger Bolt Face which reduces Bolt Locking Lug strength-
exacerbating the AR Bolt’s weaknesses
Limited projectile selection
- 0.311″ diameter not a common option in most modern bullets

HANDLOADING INFORMATION

If you load your own ammo, pay special attention to all of the normal safety practices. Recommended powder for most supersonic loads is Hodgdon H110.

For subsonic, there are special requirements and nearly all published loads are non-optimal for the 300 BLK upper. Many existing loads were developed for Thompson Center® single-shot pistols, or for ARs by people not aware of the magazine limitations. These loads pay no attention to automatic rifle function and should not be used. Look for a load which results in a cyclic rate of 700 rpm or more. AA1680 is recommended because its bulk density matches the case capacity and it will generate enough gas pressure to cycle the weapon.

Suggested subsonic load:

- R-P 300 AAC BLACKOUT brass
- Remington 7.5 primers
- 11.2 grains of AA 1680 powder
- Case length is 1.368 +0.000 -0.020
- Sierra 220 MK loaded to 2.089 OAL (this length is optimal for reliable feeding from USGI magazines)
- Chamber pressure 21,100 psi.
Existing AR magazines have a rib which normally contacts the 5.56mm case-neck. With 300 BLK ammo, the contact is on the bullet. Because the bullet is a larger diameter, the rib will push the cartridges out of alignment, and can lead to binding potentially resulting in Failures to Feed. For this reason, it is important to load ammunition so that the contact point with the magazine rib is on the bullet ogive in an area of about 0.250 inch diameter. Here are some suggested OAL for popular bullets:
- Hornady 110 V-Max, OAL: 2.000
- Barnes 110 TSX, 2.015 OAL
- Sierra 155 Palma, 2.150 OAL
- Sierra 220, 2.089 OAL
- Lapua B416 200 grain, 1.960 OAL
- Hornady 150 FMJ-BT 3037, 2.065 OAL
- Nosler Ballistic Tip 125 grain, OAL: 2.085
- Remington AccuTip 125 grain, OAL: 2.085
- Hornady 130 SP #3020, OAL: 2.010
- Sierra H2120 125 ProHunter, OAL: 1.950
- Speer TNT 125 1986, OAL: 2.010”
