Post by UpandComer » 17 Nov 2010, 07:39

Found this great deal on Prvi 5.56 M193 over at Target Sports USA. Only $309 for a case of 1,000 rounds with free shipping right now. Just picked up a case myself.

That IS a great price. Thank you for sharing :clap:

EDIT: Some quick checking found some comparable deals...looks like the price of .223/5.56 has dropped in the last couple days...

The two links below are for the M855 (has steel-core penetrator :D )

No worries. :)

Just saw this though: http://www.targetsportsusa.com/showprod ... ammunition" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Think it's worth the extra $20 to go with the Lake City instead of the Prvi? I've always used the Prvi, but which is the better brand/higher quality/more effective?

And what the heck is "boat tail?" I guess the Lake City has a "boat tail" bullet and the Prvi doesn't.

I'd go with the M855 projectile...

PRiv, or PPU is Serbian Ammo. Lake City is USA ammo. If you were to compare the two, it's really hit or miss. The military line of federal is better than their commercial but the PPU is probably compariable since they built to Nato Specs.

I don't think you'll go wrong with either, but don't expect to win any long distance matches with them. I have a few cases of PPU from a while back set aside for when the zombies come. :D

I prefer PRVI over federal right now, plus it costs less.

This will be a good sign if the PRVI 75gr drops below 400/1k again.

Speaking of zombies, who's played the zombie round on then new Call of Duty: Black Ops game where you're JFK (the president) and go around killing zombies. Was hilarious! I had 100 zombies coming my way, couldn't throw grenades fast enough or shoot off enough bullets and this icon popped up in front of me and it was for the "death machine" gun. LOL! It's like a mini-gun on steroids. Mowed down all 100 zombies. I think I need to buy me a mini-gun for when the zombies come. :laugh:

Okay, now what's the story with grain? Is 75gr better than 55gr? Why?

Read all the info on the below two links, and you'll know what you need. BLUF: "Better" depends on the barrel twist rate, as some barrels are meant to stabilize certain grain rounds, depending on the barrel twist rate. Also, .223 chambered AR-15s, should not be loaded with 5.56mm, as that is NATO spec ammo, and results in a higher chamber pressure...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.223_Remington" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

what's the best barrel/bullet weight combo?

IIRC, 62 grain 5.56 is best in a 1:9 barrel.

Kerberos, if I remember correctly, .223 Rem out of a 5.56x45 NATO is good to go but 5.56x45 NATO out of a .223 Rem is bad news due to the pressure differences you mentioned, right?

Correct. 5.56 NATO can shoot either. It is usually stamped on the weapon, whether or not it is chambered for 5.56 NATO.

PMC > PPU > Federal XM ammunition

PMC and PPU have great brass, Federal, don't bother if it's not military rounds.

To avoid arguments flaring up from certain crowds that are big fans of the XM193's, this is the one brass round I will not shoot out of an AR.

Have shot XM in many rifles and performed fine, but QC is very inconsistent, and LE friends have straight up told me their own horror stories. Just last week I heard another from an active MIL friend. This is from their weapons, not "someone told me and I heard from a friend."

Thanks for the links, I'm going to check the PMC out.

Only thing I have to add to this is that sometimes the PMC primers are a bugger to get out, they really crimp those bad boys in tight.

Yeah forgot to state that, PMC is annoying to reload. You have to muck the pockets.

Upandcomer, let's try to stay on topic :)

does PMC load hotter 5.56? I have their .223 and while it's nice stuff, it's nowhere near as hot as PPU's M193 5.56...

I don't have a problem with any federal stuff either whether miliatary or not. the only case failures I've ever had have been with Winchester .223 brass firing factory loads.

PMC publishes their load velocities for their regular 55gr bronze line as 3200 fps. Have you chronographed both loads? M193 pressures are obviously higher, but they are both around 3200 fps. Is this "no where near as hot" from felt-recoil or actual recorded velocities :p

I've shot both the PMC and the PRVI M193 and I couldn't tell you which was hotter, perhaps the M193 felt hotter. But most M193 go around the same velocities from my experience, with only 100-150 fps difference between different mfg's of the M193.

No I don't have a chrono. Just based on felt recoil, and report, and such. I suppose I should get a chrono :)
