40g "Varmint" Bullets on Sale

This seems like a good deal--the picture looks identical to the 40g Vmax, although the description says they may be cannelured (?). In any case, I figured I could use them for .223 if they're not identical to the Vmax I use for 5.7x28. Keep in mind the limit is 5 boxes:

Received five boxes yesterday. Inspected all the bullets. Quite frankly, they were minimally blemished. None were cannelured I wondered about this as well). The bullets appear dimensionally equivalent to the Hornady 40gr Vmax. The only difference? The tip is blue (as opposed to red tip on the Hornady 40gr Vmax). Interestingly, the shade of the blue tip appears to be very close to the blue color of the factory FN 40gr loads. Interesting. Perhaps I'll do a double blind test between the reloaded 'sale' bullets snd the FN factory loads.

If they're blue tip with slight blemishes they may be pull downs from 197s. I know EA does that & sells them. Most people say that you can hardly tell they've been pulled & there is apparently no effect on accuracy

It's likely that they are over run from a FN order.

Yes-the overrun thought crossed my mind. I'll look for signs of having been pulled when I get home tonight--the low power microscope is good for this Incidentally, these cost $10.99/100. I'll have to keep some in reserve and pick up some of the Elite to do a comparison.

I have been pulling the V-Max bullets out of factory ss197 ammunition with difficulty due to the seal. The bullet comes out trashed. I use a Hornady cam lock puller. There must be a way to do this process without damage? HELP!

Have you tried pushing the bullets in a little first? It breaks it loose without wrecking the bullet. I'm pretty sure that's what EA does with theirs

Yes, I tried pushing on the ss197 bullet to brake the seal but I was applying quit a bit of pressure that started to change the casing shape. Any ideas will be wonderful for my learning curve!

Thanks Cvande. Watched the youtube video you listed and found that my puller was adjusted right however when I used the seating die I was not pushing the bullet down enough. Some of the ss197 is glued more than others so about half the bullets come out in good shape. I may get a better feel for this operation as I practice.

The issue is the amount of glue varies greatly. Some lots the bullets almost fall out others you have to mangle the hell out of them..
