Sig Sauer Model 522

I am fixing to get a couple new firearms, and this one is one of about 6 I am thinking about. Does anyone own one? I'm just trying to get a little feedback on it as far as reliability, quality, and accuracy. I think it looks really cool, and Sig usually makes quality firearms, but I would really like to hear from someone who owns one or even held one and looked it over. Any info will be greatly appreciated.

I've got one ... went with it over the Colt and S&W because of reports of feeding problems with those models, and to be honest I'm kinda board with the AR platform.

There have been a few reports of canted front sight bases which I didn't hear about until after I'd already gotten mine ... mine isn't canted, plus I had planned to scope it from the start ... in fact I got this cheap ncstar 3-9x32 when I bought it.

I've only got about 300 rounds through mine but its been flawless and as accurate as I think I am :thumb:

Is the 522 anywhere near as heavy as the 556?
If it is, then I wouldn't want one. Sorry. I loved the 552, but the 556 is just too heavy for me. Old and arthritic don't mix with heavy weapons, no matter how sweet they are.

Heavy? I think the original fish gill handguards the 556 had gave it a perceived heavy feel just because of the mass ... the 551 handguards are slimmer and many people say their gun is "way lighter"

My 556 weighs in at 8.5 pounds with sights and knock-off Aimpoint micro that it came with, plus I changed the stock to the Magpul ACR or whatever it is ... my 522 weighs in right at 7 as pictured above.

I have found myself recommending the Ruger SR-22 over the Colt (Umarex) look a like
I have read of ftf's annd ejection problems, not to mention the cost difference.
The Sig looks nice and from what I have read it is an ACUTAL Sig not another companies
production with their name stamped on it.

I want one of these rimfire look a likes, but I want to see the HK 22 that Umarex is putting out before I buy one. Supposedly they fixed all the problems with the cold in the HK.

The 556 was too heavy for me. The SWAT version was definitely too front heavy for me. I was glad to swap to an LE M4 AR platform. Besides, the Sig was just too sweet a platform for getting down and dirty. That would be like taking a Mercedes SL500 mudboggin'. :laugh:

That big hunk of Troy Industries aluminum was making it a lil heavier. I don't mind it.

Love Sigs. Quality weapons. Maybe I should have stripped the Troy gear off mine to see how much lard it would have trimmed, but I'm loving the M4. Not afraid to drag her anywhere and not scared she might get a scratch. The Sig was just TOO high dollar for me.
Besides, Marcus did me a righteous swap!

Even the 556 is too hefty for me, also, for not being a 20 inch hbar. Seems like you could just place it on the hadji's chest and wait for him to suffocate.

Speaking of scratching rifles, my buddy scratched my AR receiver at this past sunday's carbine match pretty badly. He felt so bad even though he knew i wasn't one of those tacticool *coughk****rcough* guys who baby'ed their guns (guns are meant to be used, not cradled, unless they are antiques) that he is buying me an ambi safety. What I'm going to do with an ambi safety, I have no idea (I'm right-handed).

You know, you're right, I actually should be shooting lefty even though I'm stronghand-righty. I was just to annoyed to shoot lefty and my Army SDM Coach told me as long as I did ok, he wouldn't make me, so I'm guessing it's ok.

I do shoot lefty/supportside when I transition using carbines, just not slowfire for long distance.

I told my friend to save his money on the RRA ambi safety, that I'd just leech some 9mm off of him in the next match, but he's one of those really cool STUBBORN guys that will do whatever he thinks is right.

I have both the SIG556 Classic and the SIG522. Both are great weapons and very accurate. As far as them being too heavy. Really! :laugh:

As is turns out, my SIG522 is far more accurate than my SIG556 ended up being. After taking it to the range and putting it on paper, I couldn't believe how badly this thing shot. 3 and 4" groups at 100 yds are not acceptible to me in a weapon this expensive. I've owned AKs that were more accurate than that. The SIG556 was purchased to be a short and medium range weapon out to 500 or 600 meters or so. It just won't work at those ranges even with a Vortex PST Viper scope. Instead of spending $3000 to fix the 556 with Swiss parts, I'll trade it off.

Tomorrow, both the 522 and the 556 are going down the road. I feel no need to keep the 522, if I no longer have the 556. It goes too! I bought the 522 to train with. A new Bushmaster ACR will replace them. The 5.7 has replaced my Glocks as my main handgun, so a G19 is also being traded away. I'll keep a G26 for the wife and I may buy a new Gen 4 G17 just too have.

What a shame! I really liked these weapons!

It actually shot very well. Too bad the 556 didn't. They both are gone now. Sold them today.

I love my SBR 556, just slapped a classic lower underneath the pistol version. Its heavy (for an SBR), but really helps cut down on the recoil if you ask me. This method has a shorter barrel than the 'factory' SBR version for sale as well.

Yes, I got a tax stamp for those who were wondering.

I'm not too worried about 1MOA accuracy; its set up for under 200 yd, even though there is a fancy Elcan 1-4x on top of it right now, which is going to get replaced by an Eotech in the near future anyways.

I was planning on putting the 522 on my short list, but I wanted to know if the SCAR .22lr version was any decent. If you look at the reviews from Nutnfancy online, he gives the 522 extremely high remarks for reliability and very very low FTF's.. I find that to be the biggest thing among .22lr semis. Seems just about every rimfire autoloader out there has issues with FTF and ammo types, but not the 522.
