5.56 ammo

Post by 5Jeffro7 » 01 Feb 2009, 21:51

dang, there's a lot of 5.56 ammo on GB. How to make heads or tails of it all? I KNOW! I'LL ASK THE GENIUSES ON THE FORUM!!!!

seriously, though, I've looked at a lot of the ads & really, with the exception of what I've read in some of the ads (x193 v. xm193: xm is usually seconds or "imperfects"), I have no idea what really to look for...I found what SEEMS to be a good buy, but again, I haven't the foggiest.

any other direction someone feels like directing me would help

Personally, I'd look for some Lake City stuff. If you want 55 grain, take a look at this. The Serbian stuff you showed is about 38 cents a round and the Lake City stuff is about 45 cents a round, I think the difference is well worth it. I know the bulk (loose) packed Lake City stuff is seconds. It will be marked "For training purposes only," but "XM" vs. "M" doesn't mean anything as far as I know. The ammo I showed you should be the same stuff the police and military use.

Hope that helps,

Mike

They also have some Winchester USA stuff as well. I know that stuff is definitely not factory seconds, but it cost even more.

This link will show you all their FMJ 5.56 mm offerings.

I'm really thinking about getting a few of those 700 round spam cans of silver bear .223. Of course I would be hoping it shoots well from my FS2000. :?:

Prvi ammo is good stuff, though i don't think its worth $400 per 1k shipped, theres better deals out there.

O and Jeffro, in your quest to stock up on some "AR supplies" heres a link to some mags that are actually in stock, gotta pay sales tax though :(

Here is the PPU for $360 + shipping

Not sure what EA's current pricing is on their .223 match ammo but you might want to check them out too.

I think the PRVI can be hit or miss, to be honest.

I ordered a couple thousand factory PRVI .224 diameter 62 grain FMJBT and there is a fair amount of disparity in weight and measure between the bullets. Great for plinking, don't get me wrong, but I'm not convinced its the great bargain it's made out to be.

I haven't shot any of their .223 62gr stuff, but their M855 has been good for me, the m193 has always gone bang, and the 75gr .223 has been superbly accurate for how much it cost (i bought it back when it was ~360).

It's a possibility that anything that comes in a blue box is built to lesser specs, you never know.

Compared to all the issues i have heard about with the last year or so's XM193 i would still go with PPU assuming its cheaper, but for the same price i would still buy XM193.

Cheaperthandirt has Lake City M855/SS109 ammo in stock for $21.59 a box of 20, Last night there was a mistake on their webpage and it was listed at $11.59. I ordered 500 rounds, went back this morning to grab some more and they had raised the price.

Sportsmanguide.com has the Prvi M855/SS109 listed @ $560.00 per 1,000 rounds.

Seems to be a lot of mixed emotions about which is best and the accuracy of these rounds. I ordered some of both and well be hitting the range next week.

62 gr. not 55 gr.

At 11.59 per box its not bad at 21.59 they can keep it. Have never worked with this but will see how it goes

If you have the time and a little patience you can reload your one a lot cheaper, and its kinda fun to do as well.

The XM and M distinction are qualifiers from the US Army.

XM usually denotes experiemental, where M usually means that the round has been fully qualified. PPU has always stuck with the XM designator, not sure why, as the US army qualified the round several years ago. My guess would be that the US bought the design rights from ATK when the M193 was qualified, and PPU is just making something similar. This kinda makes sense since we released both the M193 and the M855 as a NATO round. As a side note for those who are curious, MK and MOD are the designators the Navy and the USMC use. So, when you see a gun, ammo, or general military part, you now know what part of the DoD was responsible for fielding it in the first place.

Now, as to ammo, for me I always keep a sealed case of M855 for the SHTF scenario. For plinking though, just about anything will work. I stay away from the steel case as our S&W and DPMS ARs don't like it ( I have a friend who puts steel case through his HKs all day long though). I would never put the steel case in a FS2000 either. So we shoot primarially the PPU stuff or Seller and Bellot. If I can get a good price on it, I would never pass up lake city ammo either. The only one I would recommend staying away from is the ADCOM made by the UAE. This stuff is down right horrible. Completely unreliable, and the powder loads differ from bullet to bullet.

Well said, Jay. Sam gets it right after 6 cancellations, 10 Pelosi meetings, and finally a letter from a senator's kid in the field. That takes about six years. How long did we mess with the M-16/ 12, maybe 15 years? I think we should rely on your squirrel launchers which carry the element of surprise!

"xm" stands for "experimental model" such as the old car 15's nbeing called xm 177's the xm 193 is the older issue ammo, while as the m855 and m856 is what is in current use by the military.

Gents,
If you are looking for super accurate .223 rounds let me know I have some loads for you. if you have a 1-8 twist 20'' barrell or faster you may consider the standard High Power shooters loads..
24.0 RE-15 behind a 77 seirra FMJ BT any case I like fed 205M or rem 7.5

75 hornady molys like N135 or N535 for a combo of speed and accuracy.

If you want a SS109 Clone you can use a 62 grain SS109 bullet Ramshot Tac powder Max charge. Must use Magnum primer!!!. Any brass. Tac is also good up to 80 grains but I believe RE-15 is slightly more accurate when tested off the bench at 300 yards with a sled.

What about PMC ammo?

"...And what country can preserve its liberties, if its rulers are not warned from time to time, that this people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to the facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time, with the blood of patriots and tyrants."

That is the kind I usually use in my FS2000, its a good plinker round. The only problem is apparently (according panzermk2) the PMC primer pockets aren't always centered so depending on your reloading setup, that could be a problem. I don't do high volume reloading yet so I write off any snags to my own doing - not the shell

When people ask "what ammo (or any product) should i get" my first question is always, "What purpose do you want it for?"
