M4 Rifles

Post by ChuckD » 02 Oct 2008, 19:02

I'm in the market to buy a M4 before those this crazy upcoming election, but however, I have reservations about which to buy and whats a good price. I know everyone here is very helpful and was wondering if I could receive some input from the rest of the community.

I've been looking at a couple LMTs but they're kinda expensive, but y'know, I'll probably be using my Christmas bonus to get it so thats not too big a problem

I personally do like Rock River Arms and Bushmaster. My last AR15 purchase was the Bushmaster Gas Piston and I think it's a pretty good buy. You just have to watch out because some folks try to really gouge you on the piston varients.

Depending on how much work you plan on doing you could always do a build. That way you could get exactly what you want!

I don't really have anything too in particular, something just reliable that shoots well and is somewhat accurate.
I've been lookin at some Bushys aswell, just trying to get a good deal on a good piece of hardware.

Lookin for a 16in Barrel or something close, with a collapsible stock.

american ar-15s are all CNC machined. Just buy a cheapo lower or complete rifle, because I am sure you will want to upgrade the parts on it later.

Buy a Bushmaster direct. That way you don't have to haggle, you don't have to question what they order for you.. just order direct to your FFL and pay the background check fee... get a good gun, at a good price. Order either a gas operated or a piston type. You pick, you get a new weapon, you will be happier than paying twice as much for a Colt or DPMS.

Rock River Arms any day of the week. DPMS if you want to go above and beyond. I really don't like Bushmaster, had two bad experiences with them, one with a 5.56 another with a 7.62x51 (308). However I haven't shot their pistons, so I might give them a look. ARs are great because of the interchangeability of them.

If you just want a solid 5.56, it is hard to beat the Sig 556. It is basically an advance 5.56 version of an AK. The piston operation keeps the gun cool, and the carbon in one spot, far away from the chamber and firing pin. Great gun, a bit more than an AR, but for 5.56, I think better.

It all depends on your budget. Regular priced ARs i have liked RRA and CMMG. If your considering going up into LMT territory you should seriously consider a custom upper from MSTN, they are absolutely top of the line.

Up here in my neck of the woods, there's a little company called SNS industries that manufactures several variations of this for around 750.00. I've heard that they're extremely reliable, accurate & the quality level is outstanding. I'd love to get one, but right now I've got about 14K in attorney fees I need to get paid off before I start buying more toys.

POF-usa rifles are the best. Gas piston, Heavy free floated, fluted barrels.
also their gen III lowers have the ambi bolt release that is located right above the mag release button. This means you can do uber fast mag changes.
Closest thing to buying a HK416.

Last time I checked there weren't any HK416 that were 16 inches and if you do find any, they are way too overpriced.

I have heard of POF. Never shot them however. Which model do you recommend. I was looking at a Recon 16" 415 upper, semi-auto. Will they fit right on a regular AR lower?

I own RRA, DPMS, Bushmaster & POF. I would rank the RRA & Bushmaster the same, the DPMS below them but if I had to have just one, it would certainly be my POF. If you have the chance to handle one, you'll get over the price. If you have the chance to shoot one, you'll be convinced beyond doubt. Everything about the POF is top notch. Oh, and one other thing, get the 16" P-308. It's brutiful :guns:

Yes they will fit regular lowers. The only difference in operation is that the gas tube is replaced with a rod/piston.

I would agree with dtask, bushmaster are teh same. I think DPMS is good as well.

POF is the HK416 at a fraction fo the cost.
I have literally shot over 5k rounds thru it without a hitch.
A lot less cleaning than your average m4.

Bushmaster gas piston is overpriced, LWRC rifles are overpriced as well. POF is by far the best.

Yeah, like I said, I don't like Bushmasters. Sorry, but every DPMS I have seen and or used has been superior to them in every way. I will check out the POF recon upper. I just may buy it. Not into the AR-10s.

Interesting bit of trivia, but that means absolutely nothing. Doesn't make them the same quality, or made to the same standard. Land Rover is owned by ford. That doesn't mean a Ford Ranger is equal or comparable to a Range Rover Sport. Better yet, Beretta owns benelli and Franchi. I wouldn't compare those two at all.

I am interested in the RRA .458 Socom. Can this RRA upper be changed out with only the RRA model or with any of the other models? I am new to the Black Gun group but the .458 Socom has got my interest.

Any of them, and a 458 Socom upper will be my next purchase. You can use the standard GI 30 rd mags, with the same follower, only they will hold 10 rounds single stacked instead. The round is basically a 45-70 +P (Ryan, go ahead and correct me if I am wrong on that comparison).

Good question. I will buy ammo from Corbon, or I could just call Elite and have them quote me a price. My use of the 458 will be my rafting gun when I run the Alsek River in Alaska. 10 rounds of 458 will be sure to stop a Griz.

There are several excellent manufacturers out there for the AR15.
Charles Daly
DPMS
LMT
Smith and Wesson
RRA
Colt

It is almost easier to list who doesn't make the AR15. :D

Rafting on rapids? I'd be certain to lose an AR. Consider one of the endless handguns in the megamagnum you could holster to actually have quick availabilty and not lose?

I have a Colt M4 myself. I think P.O.F. makes a better weapon, but they are heavy. The Colt is only about 5-1/2 pounds.

I'd like to have one too. I called to order one a couple of months back and they were backordered 9 to 10 months. I didn't bother. They will be banned by then.

Well with all the assult weapons ban talk I was able to talk the wife into letting me put a Smith and Wesson M&P 15A on the layaway plan. :D The next step is the .458 socom upper from RRA. Then who knows maybe and Eotech 512. I will post some pics when I finally get it out of layaway. Now I gotta sell a .45 to pay part of the price on the M&P that I was going to spend on my new Sig239. :ponder:

If you are gonna go in debt do it right. Charge all the guns you can. They may be worth more than gold soon. Or at least more than your 401k if the economy does not turn around.

For my fantasy AR custom build I'm interested in creating a HK 416 clone with a POF lower. The lower will use a RR stage 2 trigger mated to a 16" upper. Unfortunately the 416 upper is a lot harder to find and 5x more expensive than the lower. As far as accessories, well that's another story. It's crazy money, but why the hell not! I figure why not, I might as well do it before the AWB becomes reality.

I am waiting on my BUIS to get here. It should be here Thursday. Then I can but all the cool pieces together and make something wonderful. I started with a Colt M4 carbine and bought an EOTech 557, Knight's Armament M4 RAS rail system, GPS grip pod, Streamlight TLR-2, and the Matech 600 m BUIS.

I can't wait to shoot her and sight in the three different sight systems I have for her. :)

I just wish it would warm up. It snowed 6 inches here yesterday. Some spring break this is :(
