need a new scope for my ptr-91msg

Post by nrv216 » 13 Feb 2013, 19:55

Hey guys,

I am admittedly not a glass expert so I was hoping you could help me out. I have been eyeballing the leupold vx-r patrol 3-9x40 but I was thinking the $599 price tag might be mostly for the name. Anyone have any ideas, or suggestions or is the leupold worth it. Thanks.

Within context only;

I would compare Leup's non-high-end glass with other mfg's that might have higher values.

Their regular-end and lower-end glass do not have the same clarity as their high-end, and might carry a higher-than-you-need-to-pay price tag. That said, I have used their VX scopes and they're ok.

If you really want it, then go with Leup. But there are other brands out there if you're not brand-loyal.

Depending on your application, I might look for one with a large FOV and good eye relief, and compare the pricetag with this model.

Thanks for the input blue. I am definitely not brand-loyal. Any suggestions for other brands that you or others have had good experiences with?

Within that price range?

Errr that's a hard one. Most of the scopes I have shot are high-brow ones like U.S. Optics, Swav, NF, S&B. With scopes, you can find some middle ground on the middle-high end, but not very much on the lower end (0-600$). I think if you go to $800, you'll increase your chances of getting a higher and safer value. The PTR is a STRONG BEAST OF A RIFLE, so it'll probably give a scope a nice beating. I don't think a lot of lower-end scopes will survive for a lifetime on it. Then again, maybe they will.

Since I only can speak from what I have used, I'll vote for SWFA's HD line. It's the only sub-$1000 scope I remember using. You can get a used one for a bit more than that price in that same magnification range.

There are others like Millet, that get great reviews, but I haven't personally used one (too many high-brow people I shoot with, apparently), so I can't speak on it. I've also used Vortex scopes; if you want to get one, go with their high end line. Do not get one of their regular lines.

That's the gist of what I can offer, sorry it isn't much. I haven't had much experience with non-snobby brands.

When I finally get a carbine, I'm just going to get a 1x red dot. I can't afford to get into this glass game. Too expensive. Though, if I did, I'd probably get a Swav or U.S. Optic one... OK BACK TO REALITY. :)

Hope that helps a bit.

And drive to the rang in your Lambo? :p

I've been checking out Millet and Nikon for the FNAR. We're thinking something in the 4-16x40 or x50.

Between Millet and Nikon, I'd get a Nikon.

I forgot to say, I've used Nikon scopes. Their lowlight is impressive for the price-range. The also hold up from dropping pretty well. *cough cough*

Seriously, though, how would that 4x stack up to others you've used? I've never needed more than that for 5.56, and my only want was for a Tritium reticle.

I shoot a 1x MRD/RD on AR15s at competition from 100 to 500 yds;

4x is more than enough for me.

At 500, most people prefer 4-6x magnification.

Disclaimer: I use competition as a vehicle to progress my practical skills, so my application is practical. As such, I prefer lightweight/low-profile options for all weapon platforms; this is integral to my formula/decision to use (OOPS NOT TACTICAL ENOUGH) run a 1x optic on the carbine, because I can make hits to 500 yds on a man-sized target with efficacy.

Also factored into the formula is that if I shoot any optic with any magnification other than 1x, it will put me in a different division (Tac ops/etc.). However, as this is a competition aspect and not a practical aspect, it arrives with a lower power factor in effecting my decision making process for which gear to use.... I mean RUN. BECAUSE I RUN EVERYTHING. SO TACTICAL.

WHAT OPTICS YOU RUNNIN BRO, WHAT MAG YOU RUNNIN BRO, BRO, WHAT RUNNIN YOU RUNNIN BRO.

It is much easier to do with a 4-6x, however. Additionally, if you're using your PTR-91 to hunt, you'd want a more precise reticle.

Sorry. I've been single-stage reloading all day; depriming, repriming, individually weighing powder charges using a balance scale, resizing, hand trimming, so I'm kinda out of it. However, I will refuse to let slip an opportunity to mock those that label themselves tactical, instead of those that do their job and already are without such a self-announcement. :thumb:

Well put. From a practical standpoint, no magnification is the most reliable way to go, hence my see-thru setup (I have another identical to what I loaned you). Never missed a 300m target with irons; never tried 500.

If you don't plan on being blown up, then I would go with a standard 3-9 Leupold VX-R. Has fire dot, very, very good glass.

The Nikon isn't a bad choice either. Monarch Glass is very good, even though Leupold is better glass for the money right now.

Nobody ever PLANS to be blown up :p Okay, a few people, but not the ones I hang out with.

Also I agree that 4x is good out to 500 although I haven't tried any shoot n' scoot out at that distance.

Irish, thanks for the input, will check out the Leups too

Thanks guys,

After reading your replies and doing a little research of my own I think I have decided on this.

Any additional input before I buy it? Thanks!

Lousy scope.

I base this on never having used it and not hearing anything about it

Toadally kidding, hope it works out well. Always good to have a quality scope that you didn't have to sell a kidney for :)
