Pocket handgun for coyotes?
I just recently moved and also got a new puppy. The other night she was barking at 2:30am and I figured she had to go to the bathroom. I take her out and she ends up chasing 2 coyotes away! I guess she heard them from inside and wanted them gone, I don't know. So it got my thinking that I need a new pocket gun. I have a p3at and an lcp, but those are spoken for with other duties. I was thinking either a pf9, lc9 or maybe a p22? Not sure if the 22 would be the best round for the job? I know it would work, but not as effectively as the 9mm.

I am now a huge fan of the XD-S, if you wanted to punch a big hole in the yotes. You could also try waiting for the 9mm version if that's your fancy.

PF9.
I can't recommend many other pocket 9's, as they are either unsafe (too many safeties-Ruger) or overpriced (Kahr).

I really want an xds too, but figured for this purpose a 45 might be a bit much, too much over pen for an approx 45-50lb dog.

penetration has more to do with ammo selection than caliber selection.

True, but I'm pretty sure a light load of 45acp will still go right through it. I want an xds for my pocket, just maybe not coyotes lol.

I remember the Gov. of Texas telling a story about dispatching a coyote with his Crimson Trace equipped LCP while jogging. So... apparently, they work.

I know the lcp would work, it worked on a 125+lb dog a few years back. But that is on my gf's bike pouch, would hate to take it from there and not put it back and her be without it.
Re: Pocket handgun for coyotes?
If it were legal, I would carry my pf9 in the woods while walking my dog. Lots of coyotes around lately.

Hell a 22 at close range will drop a coyote just fine. Plenty of pocket 22s.

That's what I was originally asking, if a 22lr would be a good choice. I like the p22, it's a fun little shooter. I'm not going hunting for these things, the longest distance would be ~6ft (length of leash).
Re: Pocket handgun for coyotes?
A 22lr is plenty.
Re: Pocket handgun for coyotes?
Why not a FSN? Flat trajectory and ease of follow up shots.

Re: Pocket handgun for coyotes?
It is very fun. However, for a supposed "more accurate design" of a "fixed barrel", it is the most inaccurate .22LR I have shot, to date.fzr confused wrote:That's what I was originally asking, if a 22lr would be a good choice. And it is released by a major mfg. Disappointing.
It is, however, one of the most fun .22LRs I have ever shot. I have shot many (the majority of .22LR platforms on the market).
