Mother of all Six-Guns

Post by flyingirish04 » 24 Apr 2011, 15:50

This will be my new hiking in bear country firearm for now: Magnum Research BFR 7.5" barrel in 45-70 Govt. Kicked about like a Ruger 44 Mag Blackhawk when I shot some 405gr hardcast handloads and some Hornady 325gr Leverlution rounds through her. Put my Kimber SC Pro and FiveseveN next to it for scale. Have to carry it in a front chest holster bandolier. Good griz medicine though.

HUGE congrats man! I have had my eyes on the BFR for a LONG time, but just can't justify the cash for it right now. Very good lookin' pistol!

Does BFR mean what I think it means? How much does that beast weigh?

Contrary to popular belief, you CAN fix stupid - it's just illegal.

It weighs about 3 lbs. BFR stands for Biggest Finest Revolver officially. Unofficially, Big F#cking Revolver.

Been eyeing one myself, but I think I'll stick with .460 for my own use, they do have a hip holster for it........

They do for the BFR too, but I get your point. This kicks way less than the 460, even when just shooting the 454 Casull. The 460 though has shorter barrel options. I am just not a fan of S&W double action revolvers in big calibers. I have owned several 44 Mags and a 357 Magnum, and I just haven't had good luck with cyllinder timing after shooting them with any heavy load.

Actually that 45/70 BFR is made in .460,same choices for barrel length, same size cylinder just .460

The reason I kind of like that is S&W seems fixated on sticking the .460 into a gun with an 8+ inch barrel and jamming some kind of muzzle break on it which I HATE! :furious: so I've been thinking ether a Ruger Super Redhawk .454 or the BFR in .460.

Funny thing is the BFR with a 7 1/2 barrel is the same size as a Smith with an 8 3/8 tube, but since it's not got that crowbar of a barrel hanging out there I suspect it'll feel better.

Moot point now as I have a six inch Smith 686+ XL hunter on layaway....scandium frame, think of a six inch seven shot .357 that weighs like a three inch model 60......

I may be buying a Ruger Super Redhawk Alaskan Revolver in 454 Casull very soon. My father bought one and I need to shoot his first. I know they kick like a mule. I have shot the regular Redhawk in 454 and it was plenty hard hitting, much more so than the 45-70. Nice thing is you can practice with 45 LC and load for bear with the full power 454s.

NICE! I'm a big Ruger revolver fan. I have been wanting an Alaskan in .44 mag for a while. I want a short barrel .44 for my carry weapon.
