SCAR 17S @ 50 yards

Post by fd57 » 26 Feb 2012, 17:02

Standing at 50 yards the SCAR 17S with 175gr Federal Gold Medal using stock iron sights. There are ten rounds through the 8" target; 2 at 5 o'clock, 3 at 7 o'clock, 3 at noon, and 2 at 1 o'clock.

This is the second set of 10 rounds through this firearm and the first 10 hits were very similar. Although on a different day in overcast conditions.

Good shooting, thank you for the pictures and data.

I really think this forum needs more SCAR 17 (and even 16) discussion and data, not just pictures (though, yes).

Using irons standing at 50 yds is a lot more difficult than people think. I use them at very long distances, so I can empathize with you.

Great job, again. FN did a good job with the SCAR iron sights. They are pretty much match sights.

I finally got to shoot a scar I really loved everything but the folding stock... Just can't trust it.

Why can't you trust the folding stock?

First rifle. First 20 rounds. Wanted to see how it'd fare at 50 yards first. After 20 rounds it feels like with a bipod or a rest accuracy would be spot on.

I understand your concern about the folding stock...fortunately there is a solution available:

I wouldn't call it a "solution".

All they've done with that is moved the failure point from the latch button to the stock hinge itself. The only way to truly fix the problem with the latch is to have a complete hinge assembly made out of metal using the existing latch method, or to design a new one from scratch out of polymer (or metal).

IIRC there is a metal replacement for the hinge, correct me if I'm wrong brosef :thumb:

There is one, but it's for airsoft guns.

There is a metal hinge available for the SCAR 17S as well.

Here is a write up on the aluminum stock latch on this thread:
http://fnforum.net/forums/fn-scar-16s/2 ... worth.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

You can also buy a stock stopper which locks the stock to keep it from folding (making it California compliant).
Worse case scenario...a new replacement stock is about $150, though I have not heard of any failure yet.

Great shooting! I hope to order a 17s in the near future. I'm going to have to root around for loading info for the 308.
