I'm doing some work for the Vet Sanctuary at ISU, checking out other veteran programs online, and I found a school that IMO think is just trying too hard
UMUC - University of Maryland University College

University university college...
WTF is that?

Personally, I think they should have a degree program which is equally redundant:
Doctor doctor physician

A friend sent me one of those fail compilation vids, WTF makes people want to do that?

Seriously, why would you deliberately jump into a huge cactus, or jump groin first onto a beam, or let a "friend" drop a tire on your head from a roof?
I have never understood how people can think that stuff is fun.
I don't watch the show/movies called "Jackass" for the same reason - most of it is just not funny to me. I don't get it.

General Atomics unveiled a land-based artillery version of its Blitzer electromagnetic railgun (EMRG) at the Association of the US Army (AUSA) conference in Washington, DC, with a company official telling IHS Jane's that with adequate funding the concept could be demosntrated in "two to three years". In 2007, building upon knowledge gained under an Office of Naval Research (ONR) Innovative Naval Prototype contract, GA initiated development of the Blitzer system using internal funds

A woman kicks snow at a cat to get it away from her dog.
The woman told WJBK that she had taken the cat in after she learned that somebody had planned to shoot it, proving once again that no good deed goes unpunished.

That's a quick kitty.
The victim told WJBK that she had to go to the hospital after the attack with bite marks on her forehead and claw marks on her cheeks. The attack also led to an infection that caused her face to swell.

Feral house cats have little or no fear of humans. Combine that with razor sharp claws, fang and SPEED makes for a nasty package.

I have seen in the city feral alley cats attack and drive back animal control. That is why AC prefers to trap cats instead of trying to loop them like dogs.

Damn, fark that. I once climbed the escapeways of a metal mine from the 3800 level to halfway, so about 2000 vertical feet. But I had landings and wouldn't fall more than 100 feet if I slipped. I'll take a deep metal mine over that job every day of the week.

Anyone know a good project book where I could learn how build LED type stuff? The more projects the better.
I found some on Amazon & Sparkfun but I don't want to waste my time/money with stuff that doesn't tell me what I want to know - which to pick, I can't afford all of them :( I also want to learn more so something with more than just those two projects would be ideal.
One project I have in mind is a pulsing LED with fade on/off where I can adjust the timing (or at least set it when I make it) and another is light ring for macro photography; I found a webpage for that project but can always use another source.

Would also be a good idea to learn the terminology
I'm trying to find stuff & am constantly doing other searches just to see what they are talking about

I'm going to be practicing & cannibalizing the hell out things for a while. Think I will start not trimming things so closely for a while.

I found a diagram and pic of the fade on/off LED thing I want to build but when I went to Radio Shack to buy the parts, they didn't know what one part was...
Anyone know what this thing outlined in red is? It wasn't named on the diagram either.

Normally they are used at test points to check voltages etc. and also as a female terminal.

The shack had no clue? Not too surprised they sell RC cars and cellphones. They are not like the old days.

These are the plain type.

I believe jay is right that it is a connection point. Do you have a better picture or link to one? Also a underside shot of the board at that location or a wire diagram would help.

+2 for Jay. Could also be used as a point for an "easy-out" jumper, but, without the circuit.... ?

That's a common 0.100" spacing female header. May be used for wire jumper connections, plug-in socket for a male header for off-board wiring or a test point. Looking at the adjacent resistors and their values (3 X 1K), I'd guess that LEDs might connect via that header.

This thing??
$15 for one spacer? Why do I need this? Right now, I'm just trying to get the concepts down, I don't care about pretty (from the underside pic, neither did they). I don't see why I would need a spacer, seems to me that I can run it straight off the leads.
Speaking of pics... Diagram & underside:

I agree with Tom. In the schematic I see 5 resistors 2 capacitors and a transistor. No LED or battery connection. 2 points for the LED and 2 for the battery (pos. & neg.). And sure you could use some stranded wire to make your connections instead.

I don't get why everyone in the video acts like they had never seen anything like that, the Open crowd in 3GN have been using it for a long time. I guess he made his own? They work and look the exact same, though...

You know those moments when you want to cry and hug someone, but can’t do either because you don’t want to let yourself break down? the moment when you’re feeling so alone? and everything is hurting you? that you feel so helpless? the only thoughts that are in your head are negative and it makes you feel totally alone, like you don’t mean anything to anyone. all you want to do is tell someone how you feel, but you don’t want their pity, and even if you could tell someone, nothing would come out right. you don’t want to laugh or smile, or whine, or argue, or even be stubborn or difficult, you just want to go to bed and cry and hope this feeling passes, and sometimes it does, but it always seems to come back. you feel like you will probably search your whole life for that one person that you can totally trust that you can love forever, who will never ever hurt you, but you know somewhere deep down that you’ll probably never find him. he probably doesn’t even exist, so you just give up, you want so desperately to be alone, but at the same time you fear it so much…

Ps :- “I put on a smile and say I’m fine and try to hide the sadness I feel inside. But when I’m alone the tears start to flow and I can no longer hold them inside.…right now all I need is someone to tell me that everything will be okay.” :p

http://news.yahoo.com/bizarro-common-co ... 06078.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
What is Common Core math stuff? I haven't heard of it before today, is it more obama plan stuff? From the looks of some of the math problems, that would explain a lot.
The Daily Caller exposed a video showing a curriculum coordinator in suburban Chicago perkily explained that Common Core allows students to be totally right if they say 3 x 4 = 11 as long as they spout something about the necessarily faulty reasoning they used to get to that wrong answer
Yeah, I saw where it's Chicago but according to the site, it is being implemented in 45 states (maybe bambam made it mandatory)? If you watch the vid, it doesn't say the student would be totally right but it does say the student can explain the explain the wrong answer & that's what the program is really concerned about. They still would supposedly correct the student.

What the hell does this have to do with math?
In February, a group of Common Core-aligned math — math — lessons oozed out of the woodwork which require teachers to ask students if the 2000 presidential election was fair and which refer to Lincoln’s religion as either “liberal” or nothing.
Since when are there only two religions, and since when is 'liberal' actually considered a religion?
Sure, we joke like it is a religion at times but it takes more than sarcasm to merit a religion.
Apparently grade school math is the new political arena

It is actually a nationwide initiative. It supposedly focuses less on rote learning and more on developing the skills to determine the correct answer. I admit to mixed emotions about any of the recent attempts to improve what/how children learn. The "high stakes" testing approach seems to kill the actual teaching of critical thinking skills (and leads to teachers teaching the test to keep scores up). Anything that improves our youngsters basic skills is alright with me. It is painful to watch the teenagers at Mickey D's try to determine the correct change when the register doesn't tell them the amount.

As usual, I have more questions than answers.
Karma. Serving up justice one a**hole at a time.

Did you see/figure out the how many bags question? (Names were changed to protect the stupid)

Don CarlosDiegoChihuahuaNoceles wants to give away bags of crack to potential clients. He wants to give the same amount of crack to each of his potential new friends. He is not sure if he needs 4 bags of crack or 6 bags of crack. How much crack should he get to ensure there is none left over for when the Federales come searching?

The only answer I can come up with this information is zero.

Did I miss some? There are too many unknown variables. How much crack does he have? How many clients? What is the weight of the bags? Also at the end should 'get' be changed to 'give'? I figure he's trying to dump his supply. I might be over-analyzing this but I might be over-tequilaed.

Public school taught me *just* the right amount of math to do crack deals

Anyone have a good idea for getting birds out of an office?

We can't find how they get in but every now & then we end up with a bird flying around inside the office. None of the vents are really big enough to let them through and yet, here they are (dang-blasted Houdini birds). We know it's not through the doors.
If it were just standard 10ft ceilings we'd just open a window & herd the bird in that direction. But no, we have skylights that are ~18ft up with a little ledge for them to perch on. They head for those & have to be forced out, usually by throwing things at them. The skylights can't be opened.
BB/pellet guns are not an option, same with actual firearms :skep:
I looked up compressed air "net guns" but most of those are too big, remember this is just inside an office. I think I can scale down a couple of versions I found online but was wondering if anyone had better plans for one or better ideas?

My sleep depraved mind ;) has come up with an idea to mess with one of the anti-gunners I know.
I need some stickers made up. Subject is no firearms allowed, knives ok.
I was thinking the no guns sign similar to what Chicago is having fits about since she is from that area. (Gun silhouette with red circle & slash across)
And then beside that, a bowie knife/switchblade/stiletto knife (not stiletto heels Jeff) with green circle around it.
Put the words below that, "no firearms allowed, knives ok"

I dunno. It certainly LOOKS pretty short, but again, I can't say. I've seen some VERY short double barrels that were supposedly legal and some were even modified with pistol grips. I wouldn't want to have to shoot them. I like using my hands too much.
Well...I just went back and even though I couldn't measure the weapon itself...I used the cap of my pen to approximate.
IF (big 'if' there) those are 3" shells laying next to it, and IF you can count that part of the barrel where the shells are actually chambered as 'barrel', then it is just slightly over 18" long. SoOoOoOoO...

I don't feel like making a new thread so I'll put it here and encourage anyone in the area to show their support.

A restaurant in Rifle, CO (yes, that's actually a town) is called Shooters Grill & even the waitresses are packing. They also encourage customers to carry as well. (BTW, apparently open carry is legal is CO)

Rifle is about 60 miles east of Grand Junction, CO.

Ever had your eye dominance shift?
I just found out that mine has, now I'm cross dominate - right handed, left eye dominant.
I know my right eye vision has been slightly worse than my left since a car accident years ago, but I've checked it in several training sessions since & it has always been my right eye.
Last night, at my Bowhunters Ed class, it was left eye :wall: Now I have to learn to shoot left handed.
With firearms, not a big deal really but with archery? I have to buy a whole new set up. I just finished upgrading pretty much everything on my bow dagnabbit!

I can't afford this yet! Maybe if I beat my head against a wall it will switch back right? :wall: :wall: :wall: :wall:

I never understood the significance of cross-eye dominance.

I always shot both eyes or used my dominant eye a little more/closed one eye, etc.

I'm cross-eye dominant.

The shooter will always matter more than the gear ever will.

With firearms it's no biggie (IMHO), I've been shooting the same as you (for the most part) unless using a scoped weapon w/magnification.

For bows though, that can be another story... If you can use a right handed bow with your left eye, please do a vid & show me - I'd love not have to have to buy a new bow.

My recurves will be no big deal, I never have put sights on them, been using the arrow as a sight all along.
My hunting bow though, from what they told/showed us in the class last night, you would have to move your anchor point to under your chin. I tried it out, they're right & that's a bad way to shoot a bow. It's better to shoot left handed & bows/bow components can't be simply switched one to the other.

Well, an old fashioned "triangle" stance easily compensates for cross-eye dominance with a pistol. Even with a recurve, I would expect some adjustment. Not that I can hit much with mine. A compound with a L/R grip and sights would be another matter entirely. Good luck with the transition.
Karma. Serving up justice one a**hole at a time.

I don't care, I have trained for years to use both eyes.

:agree:

Thinking outside the box may be beneficial one day. I train with both eyes and both hands. I am almost as good with my left hand as my right hand. Hope for the best, prepare for the worst. You never know when your preferred hand or eye my not be available....
There can only be two.

D,

I must shoot bows incorrectly, then (being serious), I've shot a lot of recurve and compound (still shoot recurve) and I shoot it right handed, being left eye dominant.

Not sure how.

If it works for you then it's not incorrect.
I'd still like to see how you do it, I just spent a lot of time & money on upgrades to the bow I have (which is right handed) and I'd rather not buy a left handed bow - at least, not for a couple of years...

Bow is 95% instinctual, you really don't need all the gadgets. You don't even need sights.

Done traditionally eye dominance is irrelevant in archery.

I guess I am just not the god some of you are. I have never shot sights on a recurve & there is no way I would hunt big game that way. I am not accurate or consistent enough without sights. I am not out there to wound, maim, or frighten off - I want as clean of a kill as possible. For me, at this time, that means sights.

Everyone around here is saying I should learn to shoot left handed. By everyone I mean other bowhunters, fish & game instructors, & of course, the pro shops (but they don't really count).
I have never had anyone tell me what you said so unless you're willing to come teach me, I have to work with what's available.

I've shot recurves with and without sights.

Same with compounds; I spoke to the bow experts here in Austin (Archery Country) and they told me I don't need sights.

I index off my cheek/biomechanical consistency and my arrow. Was able to hit 30yd targets pretty well, size of a printer paper.

I'm not that good, though, I probably could do it 5 of 10 times.

Bingo. While I am no big game hunter with a bow, 3 years of archery range master work has taught me a great deal.

Natives had no sights, nor the British long bow. Years ago on the discovery channel they had a documentary on the Bow. The host went out and tried to to learn it. The instructor had him try 2 ways. Sighted and instinctual. Accuracy across different distances was learned faster the Instinctual way. The instructor was adamant that at bow ranges sighting was a wast of time and not as good.
