Trimmer for the 5.7x28?

Post by spartacus » 20 Oct 2009, 09:47

I have the RCBS trimpro and just found out that RCBS does not make a shell holder for it. The expert at my local retailer recommended the Hornady but wasn't 100% sure it would work for the 5.7x28. I am wondering what my best option is, I would hate to have to buy a whole new trimmer just for this cartridge.

Elite Ammo used to make plates for the RCBS trimmer. I don't know if they still do. But its hard to beat the power RCBS trimmer with the 3 way cutter so you don't have to chamfer/debur

Elite makes a nice trim plate for the trimpro.

The Hornady will not work. I know from experience.

:agree: Get the EA TrimPro Plate. I have one, and am able to do all of my trimming/chamfering/deburring in one step. There is no faster more efficient way to do it.

The .22 Hornet doesn't work (at least that's what I'm told by my uncle who tried it). Thanks for the help guys, looks like I'll be shopping at Elite Ammo tonight.

While I have this post up, does anyone know of a place that sells cheap bulk .224 ammo? I dont really care what it is I just need to stock up on some good cheap target rounds. I haven't shopped around online much but Looking at Elite's website right now it looks like they have a decent price, if nothing else I'll go with those.

If you have the Hornady Cam Lock Trimmer you can use the #37 shell holder with a modification. I didn't want to buy a special trimmer just for the 5.7. This modification worked for me. Start with a titanium or cobalt coated 5/16th bit to start the pilot from the rear of the shell holder, a little oil helps the bit, you just want to make a divot in the shell holder opening (I handheld the shell holder in a vice grip). The get a carbide tipped 9/32nds drill bit (you can use a 5/16ths too). Yes you will wreck the bit it in your hand drill (mine was a 18v DeWalt, don't use too much pressure) but you are only doing this once so the shell holder fits the trimmer ram. Took about 10 mins and I used a cone drill mount reamer to smooth out the new edges. I didn't have to buy any addition gadgets, and can use the trimmer I already have. BTW I had 3 #37 Honrnady shell holders and one Lyman #35 (who would have known that the Hornady #37 shell holder won't fit a Lyman T-Mag II turret press ram (it's the shell holder collar inner diameter, too big).

GONRA has hada lottsa luck modifiying hardened shell holder inserts mounted in a 3 jaw lathe chucks,
using a small grinding point in a tool post grinder.
Tool post grinders do NOT have to be "pricey" for this application!!! This is NOT "tool & die" verk!!!!!!

Get a plugin electric grinder from Harbor Freight, make an adaptor for yer lathe tool post.
Better yet - mount such electric grinder in a quick change lathe bit holder for rapid use, convenience, etc.

If you do NOT have some small machine shop equipmemt to backup up this reloading hobby, lottsa luck....

Forster Classic works no problems. Already has a collet for the 25 ACP.
