12.5 SBR in 223/5.56

Post by LA-LI-LU-LE-LO » 11 May 2012, 20:38

Anyone here have a 12.5 SBR in 223/ 5.56? Are these very loud to where you got to double up on hearing protection? Just asking because I usually shoot my guns with the small, orange foamy earplugs or sometimes I'll use my Skullcandy earbuds and they make shooting the 16 inch barreled rifles pleasant. But I was thinking of having my AK converted to an AK-102 type. The only problem I hear about SBR's is they are very loud and have lots of muzzle blast. That seems to be the only problem with them other than velocity loss. I also have no plans on purchasing a suppressor.

Shot a lot of SBR's, 10.5 in and upward.

Yes. They are very loud. Louder than a comp on a 16in, though depends on what comp. I'm glad you mentioned using earbuds for hearing protection. They will not suffice.

There is a lot of muzzle blast. If you shoot something and miss it under 5 feet, it will most likely get blown away by muzzle blast.

I hope this answered your question.

muzzle device also plays a big part. i had a noveske kx3 and it directed alot of the blast/flash downrange. when i put on a 3 prong fh, it was louder to the shooter. i ended up keeping the kx3 off because of the weight though

You're dead on. There are a lot of muzzle devices on the market that are very effective at keeping SBR blasts toward the target. None I've experienced were traditional flashhiders or comps. They are all tailored for SBR's. I hope you kept that KX3! :)

i still have it but with a noveske ss barrel, the gun is already front heavy. i dont think the kx3 will go back on.

Thanks for replies. Yes, I have at one time shot a 16" AR with a muzzle brake and it wasn't really pleasant. I could feel the blast enter my nostrils and into my brain. Felt like my eyes were rattling around after each shot. It was also noticeably louder.

If the weight doesnt bother you, get a KX3. They are technically a "flash hider" according to BATFE but they are really a single baffle suppressor by design and cut the recoil while sending the sound/flash down range.

I can vouch for the effectiveness; they work VERY well.

Balance is affected by how your rifle is set up and your shooting mechanics. You might not find that it is too heavy up front, especially since you're using an SBR.

To note; I've observed that while being used, the unit also suppressed flash particularly well, at night. The last time I was in contact with one was last week, when I RO'd a competitor at night. He was using a 10.5 with the device. I did not see an abundance of flash.

A kx3 is for sure going on my pistol build. Well, once I get the lower in.
