McGowan 28" barrel for the AR-57

Post by paberglund » 20 Feb 2011, 20:35

I invested some money in a longer barrel for the AR-57 through McGowan. I'm extremely pleased with the results - SS197SR gives me 2200fps (~400 over PS90) and SS195LF gives me 2700fps (~350 over PS90). To compensate for the extra barrel length I put a Wolff heavy buffer/stiffer spring in. Here's a picture:

I'm contimplating getting some Elite Ammunition - if I get 300-400fps more some of their ammunitio would be pushing 3500fps!

That's a neat setup, I like it!

Your #s for the PS90 are off though, SS197 is approximately 2100FPS from the PS90 and SS195 is approximately 2600FPS from the PS90.

Here's the ammunition table to give you some baseline figures:

looks like a pretty sick setup you got there :). i agree though that your stock velocities seem very low. if you dont already reload, you might want to start and mess with different powders so you can maximize the extra long barrel with different powders.

Very nice! How large is your grouping at 100 yards?

Looks very cool.
How hard was it to change the barrel? I have an AR57 upper that I need to change barrels on but I have not had a chance to get too deep into it yet. Any direction would be appreciated!

What is the twist rate of your barrel?

That will definitely factor into the velocities.

Based on my numbers EA ProtecTOR will be doing 2900FPS from the barrel.
VarminTOR 3000fps.

My bad - I was looking at the P90 velocities!

I'm definitely going to have to try some of Elite Ammunition's rounds and try some actual rifle powders to see if I can squeeze a little more out of the barrel.

The twist rate on this barrel is 1:9, standard for the round.

I had to take it to a gunsmith to have the barrel replaced. 57Center uses red loctite which requires heating the receiver/barrel to loosen it up.

Just picked mine up friday from gunsmith!! I went with a 1x9" 28" barrel and it seems to be doing very well at stabilizing my subsonic loads. But doesn't like to feed great with my 40gr handload I will tweak it alittle and post up some groups. Is yours cycling well with the carbine buffer ,? I started using they rifle buffer thats been lieghtened up to 1100 gr and a rifle spring in an A2 stock and it cycles great. :ponder:

I'm using a Wolfe Heavy Buffer and spring so I can load it a little hotter and it keeps the bolt closed longer. Had trouble with one of my handloads too, but it was on the lighter side. Factory cycled fine.

I got to the range thid afternoon and used an A2 stock and spring with a standard buffer that I removed the weights from and filled with Lead shot...
It fired and fed everything fine..40 factory, Three supersonic handloads and my 60 gr subsonic loads just fine.!

Can you provide me with the gun shop you used for the barrel ordering and having the barrel changes out. do you have any statistics on shot groups at 100, 150 and 200 yards. I seem to be running into a brick wall trying to contact and deal directly with McGowen.

What is the point of such long barrel? If I really want to push bullet faster, just use AR in 223 cal.
