Hello everyone,
My name is Michael and I am from Washington State. It seems like there is a pretty helpful and nice community on this forum so I decided to go ahead and register. I bought my FN Five-seveN about a year ago and have only had the opportunity to shoot it a few times so I have some questions. Firstly, let me state that I am novice shooter (my father was a Marine and has shown me how to use the Colt 1911 but outside of that my S&W M&P 9MM is the extent of my handgun experience), that being said I have a healthy fear of guns and I do not play with them. I'm not sure if it was a good reason to buy the Five-seveN but I had wanted it since I saw it for the first time when I was in high school. Anyways, enough about me.
I have had no issues using the Hornady SS197SR 40-grain, however I did have issues with it not ejecting the spent shell casing while using the SS195LF 27-grain. The guy at the range said it could be the round not producing enough recoil but it seems like other people have no problems with that ammunition. Could there be something wrong with my gun? Is it even safe to shoot?
I don't usually attempt to cycle rounds "manually" by racking the slide but the aforementioned jam concerned me. So while I was at the range I attempted to eject the live rounds by racking the slide. It typically jammed in the process of trying to spit out one and feed another. I noticed that it had similar problems when I used the SS197SR for the same test. By the same token I had no issues ejecting the rounds in that fashion using my M&P. I have not attempted to do that since I left the range that day for fear of a misfire and have not had the opportunity to go back. It seems like it shouldn't make any real difference since it never jammed using the SS197SR while actually shooting but I'm no expert. Please try not to flame me too hard, I promise that I don't sit around my room trying to eject live rounds from my guns. My safetys are always on and guns unloaded at home. Basically my question is that I was wondering if the failure to eject the rounds by racking the slide could be indicative of a bigger problem with the firearm?
If these questions have been addressed I apologize, I did attempt a brief search. If the post needs to be moved into an appropriate thread I completely understand! Thank you all for taking the time to read my post, any help is appreciated!

Your FSN may need a break-in period. Cycle the SS197 rounds at the range.
Your FSN may need a proper clean and lubrication. Use a carb cleaner on the chamber area only to remove the lacquer build up.
Their is a bad lot of SS195 that is well known in the community. Maybe GOOGLE for that lot number and learn if yours falls in that category.

Re: Five-seveN Newbie
Did it fail to eject on the very first round of SS195? If so, you probably "rode" the slide when racking it and the ejector did not fully engage with the rim of the cartridge. Chambering a round in an auto-loader should always be performed vigorously (with the full force of the return spring acting on the slide after it has been fully retracted.)
In general, "Snap caps" should be used for function tests and for familiarization drills. A gun with snap caps (only) is as safe to manipulate as most any other household object, and safer than some. Function tests with live rounds can also be done (as you've experienced) but needs full focus at all times and can have unintended results (Chambering the same round (or rounds) over and over is not recommended as the bullet seating depth can be changed in the process.)

Re: Five-seveN Newbie
Thank you both for your prompt and helpful responses! I will look into seeing if my SS195LF falls into that category, I had no idea there was "bad" ammo out there I had always thought Hornady was pretty reliable. I suppose any manufacturer is going to have the occasional error, just sucks when the ammo isn't exactly cheap or plentiful.
Where can I buy snap caps for a Five-seveN at? I've seen them at my local pawn shops and ammo stores but I've never seen them in 5.7x28MM. I would feel much more comfortable performing a function test using them. Like I stated earlier I'm terrified of a misfire, especially given that I live in an apartment. I've never used them before, is it one function per snap cap or can they be reused? Thank you for telling me about the bullet seating depth potentially being changed, I had not heard that before. Learn something new everyday!
Thank you again.

Did you also clean and lube the gun after you got it?

Welcome to the party. What part of WA are you in? Good luck finding ammo in the local stores at a reasonable price. If tire somewhere on the west side, hit me up.

Re: Five-seveN Newbie
The store I bought it from told me to run a bore snake through it once after each shot for the first magazine. So I sprayed the snake and ran it through after firing each round. Twenty times in all. I rather enjoy diassembling and cleaning my guns and I can't get a speck of dirt to show up on a patch. Hopefully I didn't do anything wrong to it!
I live in Cle Elum, Washington. I'm originally from Federal Way. I buy my 5.7x28MM from Three Forks Ammo & Reloading. He sells the SS197SR for $23.79 a box (plus the owner is nice enough to give me a 5% discount, not sure why but I don't complain!). It is cheaper than the pawn shops in Ellensburg (around $27 a box, and the people at Kittitas Trading Co treat you as if you are infringing on them for wanting to buy something) and Three Forks routinely has it. At the moment he has around 2.5 cases. If he doesn't have it he will put your name on a list and call you the day it shows up and is willing to set some aside if you can't make it in immediately. I highly recommend his store if you ever happen to be in the area!
Thank you all for your help! I knew this was a great forum.

Ask sometime if he's willing to ship over a few boxes to Everett

Nice. So is it 8.99 for just one snap cap?panzermk2 wrote:MichaelB21 wrote: Where can I buy snap caps for a Five-seveN at? I've seen them at my local pawn shops and ammo stores but I've never seen them in 5.7x28MM.

Re: Five-seveN Newbie
Michael,
Welcome to one of the most informative and supportive forums that I have seen! I can tell you that a lot of the daily traffic users on here have years and years of experience here. If people on here can't help you I would be shocked!
With that out of the way, question for you. Did you buy the 30 round extended mag options? I only ask because some times you have all kinds of feeding problems depending on the manufacture of the extended mag kit. It has been addressed a couple times on this site.
Second thing that some times you can "limp wrist" a shot, not a normal thing but if you do not have a firm grip some times it will lead to issues with feed and ejection.
Now I am just a novice shooter.
Good luck and enjoy the FN5.7!

Michael; I'm sending you a PM to answer your questions.
Check your inbox.
Welcome to the forum!
Feel free to use the search and forum wiki; they are quite helpful.
And a big yes to the above; this is the only forum I frequent, because many of the people are engineers, metal/wood workers, ex-mil/leo, etc. and aren't mall ninjas. 1% of them often is better than 90% of others on many other forums I have read, filled with gun-counter clerks and non-shooters/reloaders/peoplewhoareclueless. We do have a couple of mall ninjas, though. Just a couple.
This isn't so much a neg to towards most other forums, but a compliment to this one.
