Gander Mountain Price Check

Post by Bmbiehler » 20 Nov 2011, 17:39

Stopped by Gander Mountain today while I was in Wichita, KS to look at a few things. New FN Five seveN Pistol $1198.99, sounds about right. The guy said they only sell 2 or 3 a year. Then I looked at ammo SS197 for $29.99! Asked if they had any FsN Mags, was told no but they can order them for $90 each! I was shocked. I thought a large sporting goods store would have had lower prices. Guess I will just stay with my LGS, I feel better about keeping my money close to home. BTW locally Mags here are $32 new $15 used and SS197 is $20.99, SS192 is $28.99. Not to bad at all.

IMO, Gander Mountain has some of the worst pricing - I don't know how they stay in business. $90 for a mag? Holy smeg! They are ripping people off big time. Last time I checked GM for FsN ammo it was $40/box of 197.

You can still get 192? Nice!

Actually $1,200 for a FsN is too high - shop around & you can get it for under $1,000. If nothing else, check out forum sponsors at the top of the page.

Considering they charge 2k for a PS90 USG at the one here, I think you are exactly correct. The only good deals I've ever found at GM is clothing. I got a really nice hunting vest there that I couldn't find for the same price elsewhere. But when it comes to guns, ammo, accessories, reloading components... They just aren't worth the time.

Hmmm, their sale price is most business' regular retail price - thanks but I'll still shop elsewhere.

They buy from distributors, not from the factory... They pay inflated prices "to loan" the weapons and then repay their distributors... It really is not worth it unless you are an idiot......

I haven't seen any gun shops that have them for $999. I do believe that A&A doesn't even have them for $999 :)

Pretty sure I saw A&A have a sale that was under 1k$ for FsN's.

Thanks for the heads-up, D.

I didn't know that. Now I can save time by not even bothering with that store. It came up in a recent survey with Academy and I thought about checking it out. Now you saved me effort.

Every shop in ND has them for less than a grand except Scheels, which has one for 999 and another for 1049. Gander doesn't have one because their guns manager says it's a 'overpriced 22.' No joke :wall:

Gander Mountain is a dying breed of mega-retail sporting good that sprouted-up in the 90's, ballooned in the mid 2000s with the housing bubble, and is currently dying a slow death.

Their business model has too much overhead; the ridiculous size of their store, and massive number of largly unhelpful employees equates to a profit margin that requires ridiculously inflated prices.

Stay away unless you simply must go there out of convenience to try out a product that would otherwise be hard to find. The guys behind their gun counter are also hit and miss.

Good to know. I wasn't sticking up for GM, just pointing out that the black friday price isn't horrible. Is that shop good to go? My wife wants a FSN now so if I get the cash around, I'll be looking for another.

FWIW - I use another shop as my FFL for xfers. If you're local though and you want suppressors, they seem to be able to get the tax stamp processed way faster than other stores. They claim that because the do so much volume that the ATF has people dedicated to their account. I thought it was a BS sales pitch, but they really did get the tax stamps back about 30 days faster than another place during the same time of year.

in a way its true because there are examiners dedicated to certain states. but if they meant one examiner for just his store, thats huge bs.

The only time I have ever spent money at that ridiculous store is when I absolutely had to have a bow fishing reel that day and academy was sold out

Read this just to see I anybody said this. And it's not just sporting goods but I wouldn't be surprised if Gander Mountain and Bass Pro are owned by the same companies.

That's a good one but he's lying. Stores were assigned by alphabet just as individuals were. Even with the new "state" system in place forms are being assigned to those that have lighter workloads. A dealer friend received forms from two different examiners recently that are not our state examiner. The variation in length seems to mostly be dependent on the examiner. http://www.nfatracker.com/reports.aspx" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Go to gunbroker.com and check listings for 57s. You can find $929 w/free shipping on an outright buy if you do not want to play around with bidding auction.
Ammo? Last week Cabelas with a $20 rebate and a $25 credit if you purchase with a new Cabelas visa card netted me 500 rounds w/ ammo can of 197 for $151 that already includes the shipping---$15 per box. Gotta keep lookin.

here is a different side of it all.

i live in NY. :wall: :( boohoo. i know.....now get away from me with that salt!

we have a stupid rule about "da man" keeping a fired shell case. (CoBIS). any new pistol must have one for "da man". so, if i buy a new pistol from an online place i pay shipping (about $50....maybe $80). i pay to transfer it. $35 (plus tax so $37.80). pay for "da man" top shoot it. ($50). AND i have to wait to get an appointment that could take up to 3 weeks! :wall:

so $950+50+35+37.80+50= $1122.8 + waiting on "da man" = priceless!

if i buy it at gander mountain at $999 and pay the tax= $1078.92 AND i walk out the door and am off to the range. with $43.88 left over for ammo. and remember i took the $30 less shipping option it could have been $80 to ship it.

so, i know the guys at my local GM store. this always helps! :thumb: they give me a pretty good discount. (but that $90 mag sure sucks ass!)

in the end of the day i got my FSN from them for a bit less than the above mentioned sales price :thumb: they get $22 per box of 5.7 from me :p and again i walk out the door with it right away. but that is just me and my local GM. YMMV.

i get most of my ammo from local gun shows and i usually pay about $18-20 per box of 197...no tax.

Good to see another side of the story. And now we know how GM stays in business, 'cause apparently their prices are actually the better deal in some places!

Here is Wisconsin, the local Gander went from $25 bucks a box to $29 in the last month or so. Sheels, dropped from $25 to $22. I've bought ammo at Cabelas, they are $22 a box for a 500 round purchase. I stocked up with 750 rounds from a local gun show at $19 a box.

I do think Gander is on the skids. The local one has been lowering inventory like a chain store does before they go bankrupt.

why all the hate lol you guys just don't know how to buy guns @ GM, let me help you. For starters GM will price match just about anyone within 2-3hr drive they do not price match online usually. ATM the ss197 is 29.99 per box but a guy who i sold a fiveseven to 2 days after the black Friday sale was over(still gave him the sale price $999) did not get to get any ammo caus we were out so the manager marked it to 19.99 and he got 8 boxes prepayed . also he got a GM credit card so he got 5% of his total purchase and no interest for a year. he has also gotten a PS90 for $1299(Used) and yes ps90 mags are outrageous 99 bucks( 19.99 our cost +5 shipping when we don't have them in stock) the guy wasn't happy so they marked em down to $50 per mag. I know some ppl hate the big guys and think they wont stay in business but were growing and moving forward and very customer service orientated. our general manager tells us often to do whatever we have to do to make ppl leave happy even if we cant order a gun we will send them to academy or dicks. GM also offers what they call a 'ProPlan' and it extends the warranty for 13 months on "lifetime" products or 1 year for all the other products and this covers all shipping charges and extra fees all you have to do is drop it off @ GM. with this said i still don't get all my guns from work,PPQ for example our cost is more than i can get @ lots of online places.

Bottom line when/if you go to GM

Do your research on the gun 1st.know what you want and the "market price"

Try to price match anything( they can call or look up local adds online) i sold a sig p238? 380 for $449 thats 200 under our normal price when i price matched academy online

If they price still is not close to what you want ask to talk to a manager and tell them you would really like to give them you business and offer a reasonable price they can usually work with you. not that offering 550 for a 5.7 would get you anywhere just tell them what the going price is and you want to pay

Have a little patience, i often have to school some of the collage kids that just got thrown into the gun department when were slammed so i realize not all of them have degrees in the gun world. or very much real world experence

Disclaimer: im just a part time employee i don't make commission, i work there when im home to get my discounts and i just love guns. i don't rep GM in anyway. If GM shuts its doors tomorrow i have my regular job that i support my family with. continue with the flames lol :)

Its a retail store that you have to haggle at? Not one you can just go in & expect a decent deal if you happen to like something they have you found while browsing?

No thanks.

its a retail store that will work with you on prices to make you happy. if your cup of tea is always paying sticker price that's fine, don't complain about MSRPs and when people have prices lower/higher than them. There's plenty of people that come in and buy guns @ marked prices and there's plenty more that would like to save a few bucks and get some ammo or a mag or a nice dinner with the money they saved. i was just trying to give a few folks tips on how to save some $ when shopping @ GM. my time and $ is very important to me so i try to squeeze every little bit i can out of everything i do. for me to save 50 bucks and a 15 min wait is time well spent. Time is money its your choice how you spend it :)

I was in retail management for 25 years, running big box stores (think CompUSA, Circuit City, etc...). I can tell you that even at large stores, it's usually possible to get a better deal - especially at the end of a week/month/quarter. Sometimes the bigger the store, particularly publicly traded companies, there is tremendous pressure to hit sales quotas and at the end of a month, sales volume becomes more important than profit. They will wheel & deal.
