subsonic .223 rem

Is it impossible to load a subsonic .223 that will reliably cycle an autoloader like an AR15 or Sig 556?

I was thinking something in the 100 grain range.

Anyone have experience with this?

would subsonic .223 be much different from 60grain SSS (sniper sub sonic) Aguila rounds?

I am skeptical of the extreme shock because a midway review says, despite what it advertises, that it will most certainly NOT cycle an autoloader. But then that smallarmsreview article says different :ponder:

I'd still like to load my own. Extreme shock ammo is dubious (to me) and way overpriced imo.

seen a few articles somewhere debunking extremeshock. They work ok, but are way overpriced. MOre of a novelty item

A 100 grain subsonic .223 would have about 2/3 more momentum, energy, and sectional density than a 60 grain Aguila SSS at the same velocity.
The BC of the .223 is likely to be better, but both will "shoot like rainbows" and wind is not your friend.

Looking at published data, even a 90 grain hpbt with 20 grains of imr 4895 is still doing 2200 fps. I dont know how feasable it would be to try to back down from that high of an initial velocity.

Youd be better served by one of the JDJ cartridges. But Im guessing the reason you are interested in 223 is that u already have guns in that chambering...
