Bugout Project SIG completed (almost)

Post by SeaHawkDriver-B » 22 Feb 2012, 12:22

So after being deployed a year, I finally had some time to come back and complete my SIG Bugout Rifle. I had the paperwork and most of the major custom work done a year ago, but never put any glass on it or set it up the way I wanted. Its "almost" done, becuase this Christmas an AAC M4-2000 will be hung off the front.

Goals:

1) Piston 556 that takes AR mags
2) Fit into a medium normal-sized Backpack when folded
3) Tough as nails (Its an all-metal Sig)
4) Instantly Adaptable from CQ to 300m engagements
5) Quick, Quiet, Inconspicuous, Reliable

For anyone interested in the details:

-Started with a 556P SWAT Upper, mated with a Sig Classic Lower, swapped out the cheap Classic Stock with a SANS SIG all polymer unit, SBR paperwork and Tax Stamp to make or manufacture a short barreled rifle (922r compliance), Had the rifle coated 'Sig Gray' to tone down its all-black signature, used model paint to highlight the 'S' and 'F' modes on the selector switch. Added the Sig 552-style 3-pronged flash suppressor. Accessories: EOTECH MPO-II system with Flip-to-side 3x Magnifier, Military Grip-Pod, Jet Beam XML-III with remote switch on the grip pod (used Rescue Tape by recommendation from member on this forum, and it works great!).

Only thing it lacks is the AAC Suppressor, and a flip-up rear iron sight, which I feel is necessary because the Eotech is a battery-powered flat glass, so if the electronics fail its useless, as there is no physical reticle.

If anyone has any questions about donig a similar project, PM me and I'll be happy to share.

When you say 'completed - ALMOST', you mean the only thing left is to send it to me for babysitting, right? :D

Nice build. A lot of work now though since you can get a Class 3 SBR 551 directly from Sig to your dealer. Oh well if we sat around and waited for gun companies to make the exact gun we want, we would be waiting a long time for nothing most of the time.

Correct me if I'm wrong but dont the Sig 550-series rifles take proprietary Sig magazines? I needed something that was based on the 556-series so it would take AR mags.

And their 551 version will take AR mags. The original did not. That is correct.

What process did you use to change out the flash supressors? I would like to change mine out to a QD Blackout, but have not because the barrel on my 556 has no flat spots for a wrench like an AR.
