Good 45 ACP ammo for plinking
Good 45 ACP ammo for plinking
Any suggestions for a good/cheap range round.
So far I've read that Magtech seems pretty decent ($19.50 a box of 50)
Ammunition to go has some Independence for about ($17 a box of 50), but don't know anything about it.
both are 230g FMJ
gonna get some Federal HST for serious loads, but want something cheaper to practice with.

Winchester White Box from Walmart. I can't think of the price off the top of my head but they come 100 round boxes.

+1 to that WWB and its $33/100. Also Prvi Partisan markets their ammo under the name Monarch at Academy and the 45acp stuff is surprisingly good for $18/50. Also, the brass is decent if you're going to reload (which you should for 45). I reload good plinking ammo with Barry's bullets at about 20 cents a round.
Magtech, IMO, is dirty and not very accurate. I don't personally recommend it.

$16.97/50 for Federal Champion. Used to be $14.97, but has gone up lately. I think it shoots better and cleaner than Winchester White Box.

Re: Good 45 ACP ammo for plinking
my FNP-45 dislikes WWB unless I re-size each cartridge... American Eagle by Federal or Remington UMC are what I usually try to find. I have shot Independence before and it functioned fine, but as others said, it is dirty and not very accurate.

Re: Good 45 ACP ammo for plinking
I would stay away from the WWB stuff. The QC on that stuff is terrible. I am with Jay, I love blaser, and I shoot a lot of UMC for 45 because I bought around 5000 rounds about five years ago, and still haven't got through them. Plus I bought some more from fuzzy last year.

Re: Good 45 ACP ammo for plinking
I've shot the Remington umc and it seemed pretty dirty to me too. I had heard the white box is dirty, but never tried it. May check out Blazer. Blazer is an aluminum case I believe and can't be reloaded, not that I'm gonna do that yet, but I may save my brass to offset some cost.
Federal Champion may be something to try. Where do you find it at sub $17 a box?
Just got a FNP-45 tactical and would rather spend more time shooting than cleaning

I also like Blazer as far as cheap ammo goes.

Re: Good 45 ACP ammo for plinking
Thanks guys, picked up a box of the Federal Champion at Wally World. I'll check the gun shop out next week and give Blazer a shot.
If the Federal is good it breaks down to around $340/1000 rds so that's not bad, just need to shop around for bulk. I'll see what I can find the Blazer for. Either way, $16-17 a box is way better than the $25 the range changes for .45.
Gonna shop around for some Federal HST online. Want to try that as the SD round.

You honestly won't find the blazer aluminum much cheaper than the federal champion. Blazer Brass is about the same cost as Federal Champion since they're basically the same round just loaded by a different company that are both owned by ATK..
Re: Good 45 ACP ammo for plinking
Is it only available in a +P ?panzermk2 wrote:You might want to try our SD 45acp round,

You got any pics/vids with the expansion on these?
I was gonna stick with standard charge stuff for now. Didn't want to worry about having to change springs or anything yet.
I am however gonna try your protector II and T-6 rounds for my Five-SeveN.
Re: Good 45 ACP ammo for plinking
FNP-45 T is rated for +P You won't need to worry about springs. It'll eat anything

Dont mean to Semi hijack but does anyone know how PMC Bronze FMJ is for plinking? I have a guy that wants to trade me a bunch for a few bracelets but I have never herd of it. Found a lot of mixed reviews...
Thanks in advance.

Re: Good 45 ACP ammo for plinking
The bronze is different from the regular PMC, which I agree with fly on, it's crap. The bronze however, is much better and for handgun and even carbine ammo, it isn't bad. My billet AR still shoots it sub MOA. Not as good as my hand loads or as match grade factory rounds, but great for plinking.

Re: Good 45 ACP ammo for plinking
Well finally got my 45 tactical out to the range today and tried a box of the federal champion.
The Good, is that is was much cleaner firing. The Bad is that I had a few Fail to ejects and twice the slide failed to lock back at the end of the mag. Brand new gun so could be the spring was tight and just some break in needed. Noticed on the shells that one side was blackend, so maybe some gas leakage or something
Anyway, bought a box of the Mexican stuff at the range and all 50 rounds shot fine, and it didn't have the carbon marks like the federal did.
May try another box of federal anyway cause Cabella's has it on sale for $15.99 a box, can get a case shipped to the store for $319.
On a side note can anyone recommend a good speed loader. Think at most I could get 10 rounds in the 15 round mags, and was pretty much shooting 5 round loads cause the mags are so tight.
