Someone explain the rules on the ss198 cartridge.

Post by jordanrucker » 10 Oct 2008, 15:31

I know the round is expensive, but if I were wanting a box, how do I go about getting some. I understand FN restricts sales to civilian but its not regulated by the ATF. Can someone explain? I know EA products would be better, but just want to possibly have a box.

Anyone can own it. It's buying it that's tough. You'll have to pay the high prices set by the individuals who bought a couple cases at retail price if you are not LEO or military yourself. If you are, there are many places that will sell you a case with company/agency letterhead.

It sounds like you understand the rules. You "just" need to find a seller who has a supply and won't have that supply cut off by FN for selling to you.

I got a case from a supplier and sold some on gunbroker at half of what they're going for now, but couldn't secure any more. I would try again since I have a valid Military ID, but all my funds have been going elsewhere.

I thought seriously of offering to order some on behalf of the members, but couldn't bring myself to do it. This stuff is crap compared to what EA offers. Besides, it would have to be shipped to my residence, then REshipped to the members. Paying for shipping twice would make it unprofitable for folks.

They can be very finicky. They even have a release that a dealer has to sign.

Sorta rediculous when you conisder what the round actually is / does.

I believe that FN specifically engineered the SS198 as a training cartridge for those who regularly carry SS190. The exterior ballistics (bullet drop) are supposed to be closer to the SS190 than the SS195 is.

The SS198 is the SS195 projectile on top of a few more grains of powder, giving it a couple hundred feet per second increase in muzzle velocity over the SS195.

Also, it's ballistic trajectory is supposed to be nearly identical to the SS190, making it a cheaper alternative to train with for those with access to the 190.

i have a few boxes of S4's sitting in my ammo cabinet ;). i asked if it was like the S4 because they both use the same projectile and it was said that the 198 was a few hundred fps faster than the 195 and the S4 is 2-300fps faster than it as well. i cant wait to get my 57 back so i can blast off some of these rounds!

yep....like everyone else said: the SS198 is only good if u want to collect the various rounds. Otherwise, its cheaper and better to get the S4 SuperRaptor. Or you can take up reloading and make your own SS198 equivalents (or better) for the price of a box of SS195s and a few grains of powder.

ehhem.... I said grains because I assumed people would not be mixing factory powder with comercial TB. I also said grains because TB is not the only powder you can use

Search GB. The last lots I am going to sell are there. I would have sold it here, but I am real hard up for money at the moment. I still listed it at half the price of those other a$$holes.

What we really need is for EA to submit some S4 to University of TN and have the Body Farm staff get to the bottom line. That, to be blunt, is the only reality check for any ammo. "Real life" shootings have nonscientists adding hyperbole and no mention of organs/ status hit. A bladder full is nothing nothing like an empty bladder struck. Rounds need to be tested under controls and this is the world's only place that is equipped to do so. Gell is nothing like a body where bone bounces a bullet through airspace before entering muscle. I have the same strong feelings as everyone does, but without validation it is meaningless. The Massad used 22's for a long time. None of us would carry that on duty. Again-- UT Body Farm. I can assure you, with their published data we'd lose Lisa when she became a millionaire and bought her Learjet and left for a perpetual worldwide vacation after selling the company to the rest of us via the stock market.

If were to submit some of our ammo to univ of TN: would they do the testing just for the science sake? Or would there be a heafty fee?

They do contract work for the govt., but when the staff wants to publish, they run pet projects. Being the "Name" if you will, they have a huge staff and budget. It's the Forensic Anthropology Center at UT Department of Anthropology

250 South Stadium Hall
Knoxville, TN USA

Phone: 865-974-4408

If one of the guys requested testing on a new round and put it on LE agency letterhead they just might evaluate it. With published results from them, EA would grow to major league.
