Holster for FNP 45 Tactical w/light and Optic...

Post by jgreenberg01 » 08 Nov 2010, 15:01

I have talked to everyone including blade-tech, crossbreed, comp-tac, etc. plus a couple of custom places. I'm still waiting for answers from the custom guys, but the others said: No, Nope, Too new, Not with a light/laser, blah, blah, blah. :wall:

Then I found this FN Phantom Light Compatible Holster which only seems to be available here: http://www.themalabarfront.com/product_ ... ts_id=1633. And it takes 12-13 weeks to get through their backlog (bad economy, what bad economy?).

After a couple of emails back and forth, with them claiming it will work with the FNP 45T with light, optic and threaded barrel I went ahead and ordered one. I know it will cost much less than something from the custom leather guys, but it still aint cheap. I've read decent reviews, but have any of you used them before?

I so want to be able to carry this gun, but being that it's so much bigger and heavier than the FsN (which I now carry comfortably), I'm kinda feeling like a guinea pig in a fairly expensive experiment.

If none of you have used it... I'll be back with a review in 13 weeks or so...

Here's the gun, BTW, Gemtech Blackside is ordered too.

Let me know how it works out and I'll get one too, I already have the blackside, the RMR, and the TLR-1S.. the laser look like too much on the bottom. I've also got a house in jacksonville, lets go shoot FNP's one day that I'm in town.

If you're into blowing shit up, rapid fire, and not having to worry about "rules" at a gun range, my father-in-law has 500 acres in Callahan with a private range... targets set up at 100,200,300,500,and 650.

Dude, I am soooo there! My range only allows rapid fire in a small section, but they don't allow center-fire rifles in that part except 5.7x28. At least I can use my AR57 there. No rules... Ima goin to Calahan... and I'll bring all my guns!!!

Unforunately, like I said, I dont live there anymore so I only visit on occasion. But when I do visit, I usually bring some of my guns that need to be put through their paces, and most ranges simply dont allow the kind of firepower I bring to bear.

Speaking of your holster that you found, couple of questions.

It doesn't come out and say it, but what material is the thing made of... I'm assuming Kydex (Plastic), which i'm not a huge fan of, it says nowhere that its made out of leather.

What color is kyote? Options are that and black, more for the kyote.

What is the difference in the "cuts". Obviously for the Tacitcal model you'd need the threaded/extended barrel cut, but what is the difference between "standard cut", and "MD cut"?

Also, i selected Safety ON/SA mode, becuase the FNP-45Tac is one of the few Condition-1 carry weapons... no piont in buying a Condition 1 gun, if you choose to carry it in anothe fashion. However, I actually carry it in a hydrbid mode... Safety ON, Hammer Down (deckocked), such that when I sweep the safety off, I have a DA pull on the first shot. Its just how I practice and feel more comfortable with the gun that way. I'm very paranoid when it comes to accidents.

No, it's not leather, it is kydex. I'm still waiting to hear back from the custom leather holster shops...
I assumed that "kyote" is similar to FDE but I didn't ask because with leather holsters, I go with natural horsehide, but my kydex have always been black which in this case, is $10 cheaper, and is what I ordered.
I prefer leather, but I'm ok with kydex. Either way, for this particular weapon... beggars can't be choosers... yet.

According the the manufacturer:
Standard- Holster comes with a 10 degree forward cant, a full body shield to protect the gun from sweat and provide retention on the thumb safety if your pistol has one. The body shield will prevent your thumb safety from becoming disengaged while you carry out your day.

MD Cut (pistol holster)- The MD Cut holster is designed to be carried OWB and forward of the hip (“two oclock“ for right handed shooters, “10 oclock“ for left handed shooters). The MD cut is a straight drop holster (no forward cant) with a reduced body shield.

MD Cut (Magazine Carriers)- We also make slight modifications to the magazine carriers to better suit carry closer to the belt buckle. With the MD Cut Carriers, we trim the leading corner of the holster to allow for better movement, more comfort while sitting, etc. The drawback is reduced modularity with this carrier, as it will not mount up to the other carriers/holsters we offer. As always, your mission drives the gear.

Additional options-

- Any holster can be ordered with a cant from 0 to 25 degrees.

- Any holster can be ordered with a reduced body shield.

- Any holster can be ordered to accept an extended, threaded barrel.
I chose the standard cut because I wanted the shield - as you know in Florida, one tends to sweat. I made sure to tell them that there is an RMR installed to ensure it would not interfere - they said no problem. I also specified the modification for the threaded barrel (obviously), plus I ordered offset wings so that I can adjust the cant and ride as needed. My preference is a 15 degree cant but since this gun is so big and heavy (ok, not as heavy as my 1911, but I switched to carrying polymer frame guns a long time ago) I know I will have to experiment a little (or a lot) to find the best angle and carry location.
I carry condition 1 and that's what I ordered - the kydex is molded so that the safety can not move from that position while in the holster. They sent me 3 emails already thanking me and updating order status. Between that and their prompt responses to emails, so far I think they are pretty good in the customer service arena. Now if they could just work faster than 12-13 weeks!

If you are interested, I just got a response from one of the leather guys. He said that this holster http://www.kelloggcustomleather.com/karl.html can be modified for the FNP 45 Tactical and that it can also be made to accommodate a laser or laser/light combo.

They want $125 for that holster and they take about 90 days to build it.

Looks interesting, really would like to try one on before I drop $125 though.

Guys- I know this is an older post, but thought I would recommed using a company called High Speed Gear.inc out of Camp Lejeune NC. They make a lot of custom gear for Marines. I had them make me a custom drop leg holster for my 1911. I love that thing; only cost a 100 bucks and has a lifetime warrenty. Just my opinion but I think they make one the best drop down in the business. I called them this week and asked them to make me a holster for my FNP Tactical. They should start on it shortly. I will post a picture of my 1911 holster shortly to give you a solid idea of what they look like. Here is a pic of my FNP with Tirant surpressor.

Nice looking gun!

Let us know how the holster works out and how quickly it arrives. I ordered one from Raven Concealment on 11-8-2010 and at the time they said they were working on a 12-13 week backlog. I emailed them last week to request a change in color from black to coyote and they wrote back saying that they now have a 16-18 week backlog. I guess the economy isn't bad for everyone...

Here is a picture of my drop leg from High Speed Gear. The great thing is they will make it to your specs, so you can tell them how many pouches and where what size etc. You will also notice the strap around the pistol grip, designed to ensure all stays secure during airborne operations. It also flexes with your thigh so when you tighten it up it's not flopping around like a lot of drop leg holsters out there.
