Since 5.7 has been in such short supply, I find myself shooting my .22lr more than anything... which got me thinking.
Much like there is no source (other than Elite) for maximum performance 5.7, there really isn't any SD performance .22lr on the market. There is the Stinger and such, but at the end of the day these are all pretty mediocre rounds.
Personally, I'd really like to see some type of maximum performance .22lr load that is built to a defensive spec. I think a 30 grain, very pointy solid copper Elite round at 1800fps would be very interesting, as would a 40 grain designed to break into 2 20 grain pieces. Another interesting, and probably the most effective, would be a long 40 grain designed to tumble while still reaching 12" in gel. Possibly something like the aguila Sniper Subsonic, but made out of copper with a spoon tip.
While the .22lr has always been a poor choice for SD, there still is a lot of interest in a SD round for the .22lr. And I think if anyone could produce one it would be Elite. And I really think they would sell.

For example, I think a .22lr version of the VBR would be very interesting if it could meet 12" penetration:

You do know I have a much more advanced version of that type of round? For years now?

Does the OP know that .22lr rimfire is NOT made on a loading press like centerfire cartridges are?

Re: Elite .22lr load
Of course, that's why I'm suggesting you adapt it to the .22lr. I use this photo as an example because the trident breaks into 3 pieces, not 2, and that would not work for the .22lr because it lacks sufficient velocity for 3 10grain pieces to penetrate to 12". This is shown time and again with the existing 3 part segmented loads by CCI, which only reach 5-6" in gel. A dual track .22lr that could reach 12" wouldn't be a show stopper, but it would be twice as effective as any .22lr cartridge on the market.panzermk2 wrote:spyderco monkey wrote:For example, I think a .22lr version of the VBR would be very interesting if it could meet 12" penetration:

A simplified, 2 part, 40 grain trident would be ideal. Sort of like a flying hourglass profile, with some type of spoon tip to cause it to tumble and separate after penetrating the first few inches. . Also, just a 30 grain, pointy monolithic copper projectile, like the kind you also produce for the 5.7, would be very interesting.
As far as reloading them that's pretty basic, and once again similar to what you do with the 5.7. The existing lame projectile and powder charge would be removed, and replaced with the Elite sugar and spice. Because it's rimfire you wouldn't even need to replace the primers.
To give you an idea why I'm suggesting this, lets talk raw #'s.
Google search results for 5.7x28 = 172,000
" " for .22lr self defense = 161,000
" " for Best .22lr Ammo = 548,000
" " for .22lr ammo = 1,640,000
" " for .22 caliber = 3,530,000
You make the worlds highest performance .22 caliber projectiles - why not try and adapt them to the world's most popular cartridge?

Ya know what? Spidey may have something there. I'm not talking about performance because I have no idea what a bullet like that may do, butttt...
From a strictly marketing perspective - if the round was stable and flew straight - think about how a Tactically Exotic .22lr round would be received. When (if?) supplies ever ease up, consumers will still be leery about continued availability and prices of larger calibers, and it wouldn't be surprising to see an even bigger migration to .22lr.
Who wouldn't want to be the tacticoolest kid on the block with zombie-killing .22lr ammo from Elite Ammunition?
I'm just sayin'...

Re: Elite .22lr load
That's exactly what I'm thinking. There's definitely a market for SD/Tactical .22's (just look at the ubiquitous 10/22 tacticals,) as well as a strong interest for anything maximum performance. I also think that a subsonic, very hard and pointy monolithic copper bullet would be popular with the suppressor crowd.jgreenberg01 wrote:Ya know what? Spidey may have something there. For example, the US military had FMJ .22lr produced for the suppressed High Standard Pistol in WWII. I'd imagine that if anyone is still using suppressed .22's, there would still be interest in a maximum penetration .22lr load.
