UPDATED 09/11 ATF Determination on Barnes Banded Solids
Someone should sticky this. If the wrong sub forum I apologize.
This is a recent letter from the ATF, retracting the 2008 letter that BBS wasn't "brass" and therefore not AP in a handgun..

Barnes has bulldog lawyers. That is the only thing that this proves. That and the BATFE is full of incompetent morons, but we didn't need anymore proof of that.

Re: UPDATED 09/11 ATF Determination on Barnes Banded Solids
Ok so im not the brightest crayon in the tool shed but am I understanding this correct? basically you can have a bullet made of pure copper but it becomes AP as soon as you add other metals too it? Am I understanding this correct? So no berrylium coppers, tellurium coppers, etc?
Re: UPDATED 09/11 ATF Determination on Barnes Banded Solids
Looks to me like the person that signed the approval letter in 2008 didn't know what brass was made from. It's not water, its Di-hydrogen Monoxide!

H2O is Dihydrogen Monoxide is water. Brass is copper alloy. It isn't funny when you have to explain it.

It's okay, though. When the end of the world comes, they will be laughing at me. For about a couple of days. :cya:

Re: UPDATED 09/11 ATF Determination on Barnes Banded Solids
"As you may be aware, copper and zinc are COMPONENTS of brass... the ammunition is constructed ENTIRELY of brass..."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brass" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brass#Brass_types" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
By ATF logic, ammunition made with anything more than trace ammounts of copper, zinc, tin, iron, aluminum, lead, manganese, nickel, or silver is classified as AP. That means werewolf killers and ANY ammo containing lead OR copper, being COMPONENTS of brass, are ENTIRELY made of brass and therefore AP. Mentioning BRASS in the statute acts as a catch-all for most metals suitable for bulletmaking.
A backup catch-all is the phrase "may be fired from a handgun."

I jsut want to know who the hell makes a .308 caliber handgun... pisses me off I can't buy AP for a friggin .308 rifle, granted a stanard 7.62 Ball will punch through about a half inch of cold rolled steel, but put it against the hardened stuff and it flops.

Re: UPDATED 09/11 ATF Determination on Barnes Banded Solids
Yes, it really is stupid Seahawk That is essentially why posters that claim it is reasonable to restrict on type of ammo over another, are treated with such ire by me on this forum. They live in a pseudo-intellectual world that has them in their own minds thinking they are some benevolent middle of the roaders, when they are nothing more than the sheep allowing the ATF to be idiots under the guise of 'being reasonable'.
It is stupidity on parade and all gun owners and enthusiasts should know better. Gun companies are forced to restrict ammo based on stupid bureaucrats and vague laws that give them unchecked power. It is a tragedy.

Re: UPDATED 09/11 ATF Determination on Barnes Banded Solids
I have been reading a lot about this the last few (restless) nights. From what I understand, you can buy AP bullets but not loaded ammo. SoOoOo, I have been looking at .308 Die sets. I guess if you want AP .308 you just have to load it yourself.SeaHawkDriver-B wrote:I jsut want to know who the hell makes a .308 caliber handgun... pisses me off I can't buy AP for a friggin .308 rifle, granted a stanard 7.62 Ball will punch through about a half inch of cold rolled steel, but put it against the hardened stuff and it flops.

As I understand it, its not that someone makes a .308 handgun but that someone makes a .308 gun which can be classified as a handgun.SeaHawkDriver-B wrote:I jsut want to know who the hell makes a .308 caliber handgun... pisses me off I can't buy AP for a friggin .308 rifle, granted a stanard 7.62 Ball will punch through about a half inch of cold rolled steel, but put it against the hardened stuff and it flops.
When people started putting SBRs on AR lowers & removing the stock - these became classified as handguns. Now anything that can fit on an AR lower can be considered a handgun - including 6.5, 6.8, .308...
People who have ruined the purpose of a certain round have also ruined the round for the rest of us

They make a 500 Nitro pistol. Doesn't mean it is a pistol round. Furthermore, why are we classifying ammo at all???

If anyone has noted, barnes has released a statement in regards to their BBS in certain calibers getting excluded from the designation.

A full jacketed projectile larger than .22 caliber designed and intended for use in a handgun and whose jacket has a weight of more than 25 percent of the total weight of the projectile.
all ammunition is essential banned with lead free regulations they want want to push through.........

Most likely here because of the article in this months NRA's magazines writeup about the green tip bans and the 5 or paragraphs about EA's fight with the ATF in that article.
