Recipes for FN SPR A5

Post by Wollychop » 11 Nov 2008, 12:20

Just finished up some load testing for an upcoming comp.

Well, the most accurate load from the batches I did suprised me somewhat.

.308 WIN

Hornady Match Brass (Fire Formed)
OAL: 2.84"
39.6 Grains H Varget
Sierra Match King 168 gr HPBT
CCI 250 or Win Small Rifle Primer (no measurable difference)

The OAL is LONG, the rounds barely fit in the magazine (this thing has a long throat).

Gave me quarter MOA benched, I held half MOA shooting prone at 100 yards.

You might note that the charge seems low by a few grains, in fact it is just over two grains below the start load data from Lee. However, the pattern opens up a bit (still reliable sub MOA) into the mid 40 grain charges.

Caveat: my A5 has the 20" Bbl.

The muzzle report is softer with this load too, with reduced recoil.

Anyone have any other pet recipes?

hm, kinda odd that your groups open up as your charge goes up. Not saying its impossible, just odd. I wonder... for my rifle, I worked up to max safe then back down to max accuracy which was not too far from max safe. Granted, mine is a .300wsm, but if you havent tried this already, it might be something, eh? Although, 1/4moa is NOTHING to sneeze at lol

If you haven't already, try 175s with the Varget, see how that works as well.

For recipes, try http://www.reloadersbench.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; lots there to work with anyway.

Good luck at the match :thumb:

It might just be this particular bullet / brass / powder combination too.

Sometimes barrel vibration can even come into play. I'm going to try IMR 4895 as soon as I can get a couple pounds too.

Haven't tried the 175's yet! Will have to put that on the list.

yeah, yeah that definately would make sense, eh? I load for hunting here, so match loading would be more about the inches than the energy delivered. Hm, something more to think about hehehehee

i've only recently started reloading for my A5, 24" fluted.

right now i am using

.308 WIN

Nosler Brass, and once fired federal brass
OAL: 2.80"
43.0 gr IMR 4320
Sierra Match King 168 gr HPBT
Federal 210 primers

very minimal testing so far, around 2500-2550 fps at the muzzle. 100 yard groups typically in the same hole, 200 yard they all touch each other.
