Gentlemen,

I know a lot of you around here are avid knife collectors and I am planning on getting one for my brother as a gift. I want to spend around 75 bucks but want to impress him too. Please make some suggestions so I can get some thoughts flowing. Thanks in advance!

Folder or fixed?

Either actually, to give you an idea of what he likes he already has a gerber fixed blade with a black rubberized handle, a spyderco ladybug, a benchmade griptilian and some other similar knives. I guess he is into more tactical looking stuff.

I picked up a CRKT Folder Hissatsu last year after reading about it in a magazine. Bought mine used for $40, but they can be had new for not much more. Exemplary knife for everyday use.

I picked up one of these Kershaws a while back and carried it till I went to a ceramic blade. Takes some getting use to but it's pretty quick to learn. And I guess you could consider it tactical. Says there out right now but might get some more in.

For the Price Point, I think the Kershaw Rake would make a nice, unique choice:

This Kersahw rocks. Mostly because of the scales. I have over a dozen Kershaws and while the leeks, chives etc look really cool the scales are to thin for real work and will cut into the palm of your hand.

The grip on this knife really fills your hand when your really working and not going out to dinner.

This was my first knife. I loved it. My favourite knife (and the only folder I own) is the Benchmade Griptilian, which your recipient already owns. The Blackout is like the Griptilian with an assisted blade. The blade is incredibly sharp, and my only con about it is the tip of mine broke off easily.

Then again, I abused it, so I can't blame the knife.

Thanks guys, I really like the ones panzer, boba and mrfreeze suggested. Keep the suggestions coming though. Gonna be hard to decide now with all of these choices.

If you are looking for something that he can really use hard in the fixed variety I suggest either the Esee 3 or RAT 3. Essentially both the same knife. I would go with the 1095 steel but they come in that or D2. Both good choices.

I have herd good things about these 2 knifes for years. I finally just got on a job where they do NOT allow retractable blade knives. As an industrial construction worker, I use a box cutter all day. So I took the opportunity to finally pick up one of these. I went with the Esee 3. I have been beating on this knife for about a month now and it is holding up really well.

I like to push my stuff to the limits. Today I was using it to pry up some wood then after I could not get the wood out I just cut through it ultimately ending up on the concrete floor. I do stupid stuff like that. It is holding an edge VERY well and has no chips or rolled edges.

My goal is to find the breaking point of this knife before the job is over. Im trying my hardest but it is holding up well.

I see lots of people praising the CRKT line, but I haven't had the best experience with them myself. I've had two of these (shame on me) http://www.crkt.com/M16-10-EDC-Black-Gl ... Combo-Edge. The handles suck IMO with way too much flex. The auto lock system fails full time on one and occasionally on the other (fails as in locks open and I have to pry the liner back over manually to unlock). The steel didn't hold an edge for <profanity> and even the serrations wore down. I bought these at two different retail stores, so I doubt I got fakes.

Is it just me?

I got an IZULA with the kit and love that thing - it goes with me hiking/camping.
