Mystery ammo 28 grain 06 stamp hollow point LEAD core

Post by OMP1973 » 22 Dec 2009, 19:48

Ok I purchased this ammo thinking it was the LF version of the stuff we have all seen before. I pulled a bullet and it sure looks like it is lead under the copper jacket. It has a O6 stamp and a green sealant around the primer.

Any ideas what this stuff is?

Ok

Both the SS192 and SS195 use the same Aluminum cored bullet. If that bullet as big as it is was filled with lead the bullet would weigh 70grains.

The LF meaning Lead Free refers to the LF primer compound on the SS195.

if youre unsure, pull the bullet (might need a collet-style bullet-puller, which should only set you back like $12...not the hammer/kinetic type: get .224" collets or sometimes they go by .22 caliber) and weigh it. Either that, or chrono it. What color was the box? Does it say SS195 or SS197?

i just got some of those new blue box SS195lf from midway at ~$26 (i think) a pop + shipping [a rip-off]... they say they are 27g (I only need them for pull-down purposes anyways)...although I know significant variation exists. The bullet should be ~27-28gr and have a length of ~.816-.820". I've been meaning to chrono the blue box to make sure exactly how much slower they are than the traditional white box 195...

Ive never heard of factory lead projectiles except for the 40 Vmax (and the rarer subsonic SB193)... and some of the EA offerings. Desert ammo (although I won't buy from them for several reasons, chief of which is that their bullets are too heavy and the rounds are slower than what I could make myself) supposedly sells 55gr lead rounds among other things...

I will do that but is there a way to tell the ss192 from the ss195? I dont want to go a burn this stuff up on cans if it has more value to someone else. Does the 192 have a significant diff in powder charge?

Originally the only difference was a lead-free primer, now with the blue box SS195LF we've seen there has been a lighter charge. SS192 runs about 2,000fps while the current SS195LF is in the 1,800's I think.
