My New AR-10, UPDATED with range report and pics...

Post by jgreenberg01 » 27 Aug 2009, 09:43

A little more gun porn...

DPMS LR-308 with 4 rail free float tube
custom flash hider
custom sniper grip
CAA sniper stock with monopod
Harris bipod
Timney 4lb trigger

I cheaped out on the optics with an off-brand 10-40X scope because I spent my extra $$$ on an FsN and half case of ammo (and now some EA ProtecTORs as well, and a Blade-Tech UCH - somebody stop me!!!). If I come into some more $$$ I will be adding a Nightforce 12-42x56 scope.

Cool rifle. I love the folding monopod on the stock. I have not seen a set up like that before.

The flash hider was made by someone in MN for a LEO - I will try to find out more details.

I have only put enough rounds through to zero in the scope. Unfortunately I only had inexpensive federal 7.62 rounds and could only manage 2-5" groupings at 200yds. Here's a quick vid of my son shooting it for the 1st time...

DPMS LR-308 Range Report

I hate when I get distracted and can’t follow up quickly, but I finally got the ammo I wanted to test and took the rifle for some real range time. It only took 5 months from my original post during which time managed to run 200+ rounds of cheap ammo through mostly at 100yds. Here’s the belated range report:

Since I don’t hand load (yet), I decided to try 4 brands, all match grade, 168gr, BTHP which were: Black Hills, Remington, Hornady and Federal. I assumed that the federal would outperform the others based on reading several forums and many discussions with the hand-load experts at the range.

I went to the 100yd range on Friday afternoon and it was packed (maybe because it was the first really nice day after that record Florida cold snap? People must be playing hooky!). Off to the 200yd range instead. No one there, yee-haw. Conditions:

Temperature 72º, wind NNE 10mph, 53% humidity, clear skies.

I started with several fouling shots using 150gr Federal white box ammo, and also got the zero pretty close at the longer distance. I decided to just keep the rifle well oiled and to NOT clean between brands because I found that the groups become tighter as I put more rounds downrange. The gun did experience 4 failures to feed in the 80+ rounds (including the bulk Federal ammo that I fired).

I fired 1 group of 3 and 2 groups of 5 for each match grade ammo, plus a bunch-o-rounds of the bulk ammo. Here’s the results:

Brand |---------------------------------------| Smallest |---| Largest |-----|Avg
Federal 150gr, FMJ white box |-------| 2.75” |-------| 3.50” |------| 2.75”
Black Hills 168gr, BTHP Match |--------| 1.50” |--------| 3.50” |------| 2.17”
Remington 168gr, BTHP Match |-------| 1.75” |--------| 2.50” |------| 2.17”
Federal 168gr, BTHP Match |------------| 1.25” |-------| 3.00” |------| 2.00”
Hornady 168gr, BTHP Match |-----------| 0.75” |-------| 1.63” |------| 1.20

I was a little surprised that the Hornady outperformed the Federal ammo, but I guess that’s what she wants to eat. I’m glad because it was the least expensive of all the rounds! I did not exclude a few flyers due to some lung congestion and an irresistible urge to cough, so I know the gun can do better.

A note about the trigger… the Timney drop-in AR10 functionality is night and day compared to the factory standard trigger group. The original felt like I was pulling my finger through about a mile of gravel before the bang – very, very distracting. The Timney installed in about 15 minutes and while it’s supposed to be a 4lb pull, it feels lighter than that, is crisp, clean and has no creep. It made a HUGE improvement in the accuracy and I highly recommend it!!!

A note about the scope… when I win the lottery, I plan on getting a Nightforce 12-42x56mm NXS, however since this addiction is making me poor, I had to save some coin with a 10-40x50mm Osprey for about $140. I’ve heard all the horror stories about the off-brand optics, so maybe I got lucky with this one, but the scope has not lost its zero in close to 300 rounds. The image is clear up to about 32x (and then starts to darken a bit after that), but I can still read the writing on the target at 200yds at the full 40x. I did not need to use a spotting scope at that range. The only negative was that the mounting rings that came with it were junk and I had to replace them with Leupold rings.

So I’m wondering – has anybody else had the same kind of results with these brands? I’m pretty happy with the Hornady groupings at 200yds, but hey, if there is something more consistent out there… it’s never a bad idea when you can find an improved advantage over the zombies!

Range pics:

Ammo: The Black Hills were seconds - just cosmetic issues

Target: This was the final target I used with the groups of three (instead of 5), my cough was killing me and it had the largest and smallest groups on this page

I’d like to try competing in F class, so next on the agenda is to go watch a match to get an idea if this rifle can come close to what the bolt action rifles do. I’ve never competed and have no idea what to expect, but it should be fun although I’d hate to look silly…

Time to zombify this thread because I finally found a place where I can actually shoot beyond 200 yards. At 100 or 200 yards the rifle is pretty much a tack-driver, but it's a really cheap scope: a 10-40x56 at only $150. I wanted to see what it would do at 500 yards but I kinda assumed that with cheap optics it would be a challenge at that range.

I was correct, I couldn't even turn it up to 40x because it became too dark & blurry. 36x-ish was tolerable and usable, but still blurry. I think it (and I) did pretty good for shooting beyond 200 yards for the first time - even hit the 4"x4" exploding target on the first shot!

For reference, the target was a NRA type B-29 and the outside ring is approximately 10"x7".

I am so getting a better optic when I have the funds...

That cheap-o Osprey 10-40x50mm scope was actually pretty good out to 200 yards. I thought it was a big win. Even though I hit the target at 500 yards (the explosive target was 4"x4"), I have to tsay that the scope was more of a hindrance than anything else. Blurry doesn't really begin to describe it and the looking through it at anything over 30x, the world became a very dark place.

When I built this rifle the original plan was to get a NF NXS scope but I decided it was overkill (and just a tad too much money) for this rifle. I got a hold of a little bit of cash, and after testing out various scopes, I just ordered a Leupold VX-3L 6.5-20x56mm with the varmint reticle.

Yeah, yeah, I know... it's a lot of $$$ to shoot exploding targets with so I may have to finally take up hunting. Either that or the Zombie Apocalypse needs to begin sooner than later.

Reaver Apocalypse is more likely based on what we've been seeing lately. :skep:
