308 AR Style Rifle - POF or SIG?

Post by Vortec MAX » 29 Oct 2013, 07:08

I am in my research phase of purchasing a 308 AR style rifle. I have had an 18" barrelled SIG 716 Precision on pre-order for well over a year (might even be two years) and that has obviously not panned out. SIG is still not shipping those.

I have been looking at 16" barrelled rifles now. I like the Patriot Ordnance Factory (POF) rifle best when looking at the specs, but I remember Jay saying they sucked. I can't really find anything negative about them in articles, etc.

The other rifle I was looking at was the SIG 716 Patrol. It is almost a pound heavier than the POF.

I have handled both in the stores, and like the fit/finish and weight of the POF better.

What experience do you all have with these rifles? What advice do you have?

Thanks in advance.

Mike

POF was cheap junk.

How patient are you? One of the best AR's to come done the pipline for decades is the Ruger AR. Great price point for a great fully loaded rifle.

Well Ruger is coming out with a .308 version.

I would go with the Ruger.

If/when the excitement calms down over the Ruger and the price drops to maybe the $1,800 range, I will probably pick one up. Add a Timney trigger and, boom, awesome rifle!!!

So you think the Ruger would be better than the SIG 716 Patrol rifle?

The place that had the Ruger for $1,695 is now sold out.

I have not put both through their paces but I just like the options and now Ruger executed them.

The Sig weighs 9.3 and the Ruger 8.2.

The Sig has all the rails permanently attached as fare as I can tell where as the Ruger they can be removed saving more weight.

Plus the Ruger hand guard extends over the gas block.

Somebody got a great deal.

Well, I did it. I bought the Ruger for $1,627 shipped.

If you guys want one at that price, here is the link:

Ruger SR762 308 16 BLK 20R

I guess I can quit researching this purchase now. :D

And... it was the cheapest choice, which will make my wife happy.

Thanks for your input.

Ruger vs SIG vs POF, I would have gotten the Ruger.

They dropped the price to $1,575, but are now sold out. Cool thing is that they give you a 30 day low price guarantee, so I will get a refund of the $52.

Picked up the Ruger SR-762 yesterday. My initial impression is very positive. Once I gather all the parts to mount my scope and get it on, I will put in some range time and report back. I also have a Geissele SSA-E trigger and a Smith Vortex flash hider (with lugs for a can) to install on it.

Pics will come soon as well.

So I put the Geissele SSA-E trigger in my new Ruger SR-762, and I put a Noveske QD swivel end plate on, and I moved to the Smith Vortex flash hider.

How the heck do you get the Ruger flash hider off? It does not have any flats for a wrench. The front has a shape like an AR-15 bolt face inside. Is there some special wrench for this?

By the way, I had to remove the pistol grip and remove the selector lever to install the trigger on this rifle. Is that typical of AR-10 variants?

I will also say that the collapsible stock that comes on this rifle is very cheap feeling. It is sloppy on the extension tube. It does have a nice Ruger logo on it, so I did find one positive. I ordered a Magpul ACS for it. That will be a big improvement.

I had some trouble finding a mounting solution for the Nikon M-308 scope I bought for it. The Samson BUIS that come on the rifle are nice pieces, but the rear aperture sticks up even when the sight is folded down. I needed to find a mount that held the scope centerline 1.625" above the rail. I ended up buying a Larue quick release 5/8" riser and some Brownell 1" tall picatinny rings. The two together get the scope above my rear sight.

I got it. A T60 Torx bit took it off. Now I have the Smith Vortex on there. I put it on with high-temp red Loctite, then I decided it wasn't lined up perfectly and tried to loosen it. I bent my wrench. I guess it's close enough :)

Itchin' to try it out now. Hey, I need to sight in the BUIS... right?

You used RED?!?!?!?!?!?!? Never use red if you even want to remove something again.

The instructions wanted me to use ROCKSETT, which is some aerospace strength superglue stuff. I compromised by using the high-temp red. I figured it would be easier to remove if I ever wanted to. I would just heat the joint up with a heat gun or propane torch.

The flash hider has lugs for my can. They don't want it coming loose under sustained fire I guess.

I think Benelli uses the equivalent of red Loctite on their magazine tubes for their M4 shotguns. I had to get mine pretty toasty with a heat gun to break it loose. It can be done though.
