New glass for my ptr-91 msg

Post by nrv216 » 24 Sep 2012, 17:45

Hey guys,

Looking to put a new scope on my ptr and am kind of stuck. My price range is only about $600 and I am currently looking at the Leupold vx-r 3-9x50mm with the ballistic firedot reticle, the vx-r 3-9x40mm with the mil dot style reticle, or the vx-r 3-9x40mm with the ballistic firedot reticle.

Some of my concerns are whether or not I really need a mil dot or any kind of range calculating reticle, overall length of scope interfering with the ptr charging handle (both of the 40mm scopes are 12.6in and the 50mm is 12.2) and also mounting. I am looking at the leupold quick detach weaver style rings but I am clueless about height and also not sure if mounting weaver style rings on a picatinny rail is 100% ok.

Thanks in advance for any advice on the subject!

I like the mil-dot thing on mine, gives me a good idea about compensating for various distances. If you're going to stick with one distance (or thereabouts) then you don't need it.

You've seen mine, a Millett 4-16x50mm TRS. $320

I did have to put a QD mount on it which raised the scope & allowed it to be move forward. $150
http://www.gggaz.com/flt-scope-mount.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I haven't had any problems with it coming loose.
I did try Weaver mounts first but ran into the same problem you are having. So I got the riser thing.
Contrary to popular belief, you CAN fix stupid - it's just illegal.

Rapier,
Thanks. I think I will go with the mil. Its only an extra $30bucks after all.

For rings, I was looking at these. http://www.opticsplanet.com/leupold-qui ... rings.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

but these specifically say they work with picatinny rails http://www.opticsplanet.com/warne-mediu ... 41660.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

As far as ring height medium should be fine right? 30mm tube on all the scopes listed above and the mil dot one has a 40mm objective.

Honestly for $600 I would go with a Vortex Viper UNLESS you can find a LR VX-3 or Mk4 on sale.
