Best Chambering for T/C Contender?

Post by Grantness » 18 Nov 2008, 12:23

I've been looking into various chambering for my contender (in addition to 5.7x28). I guess I've been focusing on .224 caliber barrels so that I can utilize the same bullets Ive been buying for the 5.7x28. However, Im not averse to something larger if it has the right ballistics.

I like the 22 PPC and 223 Ackley Improved, but Im leaning toward the PPC because brass I dont make my own brass and 22 PPC IS actually available.

I was hoping to find 220 Swift, 22-250, 6mm PPC, 6.5 Grendel. 6,6 Creedmoor or 6mm BR chambered for a contender, but no such luck. Too much pressure I guess (even for a bull barrel).

Thoughts?

Did you inquire to see if they would chamber any of those calibers for you? Might be worth a shot to ask

Google! ;)

22-250 would have my vote (for what my $0.02 is worth.)

I guess I could ask. Match Grade Machine says on their website that certain calibers can only be chambered in the encore. 22-25, 220 Swift, 6mm PPC, 6mm BR were among those. There are some calibers for the Contender that they will only put in a bull barrel.

Im looking for the most accurate/longest range/and highest velocity I can find in .224/6mm/6.5-6.8mm or maybe even 7mm if a decent chambering is available.

They will do 6.8 Remington SPC BTW. I dunno if that is the best round that I can find for a Contender or not. I know it is pretty sweet in an AR, but that is a semi-auto platform and prob has more limitations.

Looks like SSK will do 6.5 Grendel as well as some other really interesting cartridges for the contender.
I wish they would provide a complete list with descriptions on their website, though :?: http://www.sskindustries.com/contender.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Does anyone think one of the Lazzeroni cartridges would be suitable for a contender?

Me thinks JDJ and SSK Industries is probably the best Im going to find (since these cartridges were developed specifically for contenders/encores). The 257 Mini-Dreadnaught looks like the best to me. The 6.5 mini-dreadnaught looks cool too, but it doesnt seem to be much of an improvement over the 257....

You can read about many of the JDJ cartridges here: http://books.google.com/books?id=UoWa4C ... #PPA239,M1

*Damn thats a long link! :huh: *

If you have a long URL you can use http://tinyurl.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; to shorten it.
