AR15 Magazines

Now that Blue and Jay set me straight on CZ magazines, I should pick up a few for my AR15 5.56 since I currently have two. I have found two brands at reasonable prices so I was wondering what everyone thought.

My first choice is a CMMG brand magazine that holds 42 rounds. I can get a three pack of them at a good price. I have a CMMG .22LR upper receiver so I know that they usually make a quality product. Anyone have any experience with their magazines?

My second choice is a 40 round Brownells or possible Colt stamped magazine. For $20 more, I get a ten pack of these compared to the three pack of the CMMG. I would go with the ten pack; however, I am not familiar with Brownells or what Colt stamped magazine actually means. I know the magazine will fit into a standard AR15, but how good is this brand?

Thanks for everyone's advice.

I have heard they are ok.

I run nothing but Pmags in my 5.556. I prefer 20 rds so they do stick out so much, but I also have 30 rd for when the zombies attack.

I have two twenty round Pmags right now as well, and have not had any problems with them.

PMAGs are good magazines, I'm always concerned with how well he feed lips would hold up from being chipped and what not after being dropped. My current favorites are the Lancer's, steel feed lips, smoke clear polymer body, and a rubber floor plate to help absorb some shock if they land that way.

Don't worry about chips. It will happen 1% of the time, not as much as the tacti-retards will want you to think. The PMAGS are very strong. Very strong.

Lancers are good magazines, also. I have not tried their new line, but their older line is good to go.

You do not need your magazine floorplates to "absorb shock". Another tacti-retard-started myth.

Don't buy 40 round mags. Most do not work 100%.

You want to find the best mags? Go out there and shoot competition and ask the shooters.

You want to find gear that works? Go out there and shoot competition and ask the shooters.

We suckers test everything till it fails. We don't dump dirt on it on some "torture test" (though some of us, like myself, do, just to make people shut up), but we make things fail before we even need to dump dirt on it.

Today what did we see? The new 60 round mags from Surefire.

Last time was 48 rounders from Lancer's add-on.

If you want higher capacity, honestly, go buy a beta-C mag. I know those usually work. Yes, we even use those in competition. The tactical crowd often copies the practical shooters' gear, and how they set up their rifles. Don't believe me? Go look at the trends. I don't want to start an argument over us vs. them, but I am pointing this out because it seems that your information has arrived from a typical tacticool shooter's standpoint.

What I'm trying to say is this; you shouldn't take my word or someone's word that some floorplates take out shock etc. and you need it. Go test it out for yourself, and you'll find the best method that works for YOU. :thumb:

PMags work fine. You don't need 40 round mags. Buy PMags or Lancer.

Blue, I'm shocked. That is incredibly politically incorrect of you. They like to be called tacti-mentally challenged. Please try to be more considerate next time!

This. If people would just stop repeating and believing that what they read on the internet is true... and ask the real experts, or better yet start testing for themselves it would save so much time and energy. But then again, what would the world be without the S4M fps complaints or 5.7x28 vs. .22WMR argument?

I'm just sayin...

On topic: I use PMags in my DPMS LR308 & AR15. While I don't torture them like the competition shooters do, they not only have never failed or chipped (I've dropped them many times), but they consistently feed more reliably that the factory mags.

I would take 2 20 rd Pmags over a 40 rd mag any day.

Since when does need factor in most gun purchases? :p I rarely shoot more than 10-15 rounds at a time a the range personally. Ammo goes too fast.

I can definitely back up the comments on the pmag. I had one when I had my AR and I loved it. Easy to load and feeds reliably. Plus I like the dust cover. I have a few C-Products mags I use in my FS2000 and they also have works very well.

I do like my 30 round PMags. Easy to load with stripper clips, and never had a problem with them. Dust cover is nice. Ammo does go fast, and it isn't cheap. I think I will go with the PMags, but might stick with the 30 round magazines since I have had good luck with them.

For conventional metal Brownells has a house brand they sell in 5 mag packs for a sweet price. I like them and they have worked well for me.

The best mags all around by far have been PMAGs. I have been using them all summer and they are great.

I've always been curious as to know how durable the PMAGs are, I've abused mine some (not on purpose, it just happens), and they have always held up, glad to know others have too. The Lancer L5's are the ones I have. I always like the Lancers for 30 rounders for some reason, not sure what turned me on to them. For 20's it's a toss up between the PMAGs, and standard aluminum ones. And I agree with I'd rather have two 20 round PMAGs over a 40 round mag anyday.

I only use pmags currently and over the course of a couple thousands rounds have never had a failure.

Hey blue how did those 60 round surefire's do? I think one could be fun to have around just for plinking.

They work but are horridly overpriced, much like what surefire produces.

I would think twice on using a 60 round magazine. I only thought about it for competition. If you have a failure in a 60 round, you lose a tonne of ammo and it will really screw you over. 30 rounds is more than enough before reloading.

But if you have the cash, buying overpriced objects for fun, what's new? :)

I have about 50 NHMTG mags and they all work flawless, and I have about 20 Pmags, and they work the same.
The one Beta mag I have works perfectly also, but don't use it too much anymore, sucks to load.
