I don't know about the Walther, but I have an XD and it has never has a single problem of any kind. Built like a tank and even more reliable. The XD would get my vote.

If the P99 shoots anything like the PK380 I can say it will be a nice gun. I have yet to fire an XD but I was impressed with them in my hands. Get to the shop and feel them side by side and if you have the opportunity try both at the range.

I have been looking at getting another CCW type gun, I'm looking at the P99 and maybe the Ruger SR9c (updated compact version of SR9). Wish I had a nearby range that I could test both of them out.

I'm a fan of the Walthers. I can't say anything about the XD's though, I've never shot one. I have a couple of buddies that like them though.

Have XD in 9 and 357 Sig. The 9 has never hiccuped, but the 357 has been terrible. The two other 357 Sigs I have are great, but not the XD. I don't care for the 9, so I only ran about 4 or 500 rounds through, but it has been flawless and holds aimpoint regardless of how hot the gun is run. No recoil compared to everything else.

My 2 cents, before you make a decision take a look at the S&W M&P's.

It depends on the rest of the guns in your safe. The biggest detractor to the Walther is that the mag release is on the trigger guard rather than on the side of the frame like most guns.

In a SHTF scenario that could prove disasterous.

I have the P99. The only thing I don't like is when you de-cock it, you have to re-rack the slide a quarter way to re-cock it. I prefer my H&K P30, because it has an exposed hammer to re-cock after de-cocking it. Both shoot well and have adjustable grips.
Better to have a tank when you don't need it then to need a tank when you don't have it.

I think both are great guns. Get which ever one feels the best in your hands. So much about handguns is how they fit in your hand. You don't like the feel, chances are you won't shoot as well.

Of the two, the P99 fits my hand the best so I would go with that. But that is just me.

My friend has a 1st gen P99 (blued, typical carry/holster wear), he doesn't like it, and would happily off-load it to anyone interested.

Shoot me a PM if interested.

My brother runs a range and hates XD's, he says they're crap. I have no personal experience shooting them but have handled several, they are way too "glock-ish" in my opinion. And the REQUIREMENT to pull the trigger every time you disassemble it (as is the case with a glock) is the height of idiocy to me. I heard the new XD's don't require you to pull the trigger any more for disassembly, but again, I have no personal experience as to whether or not that's actually the case.

The Walther P99 is probably one of, if not the most under appreciated pistol ever made. A real gem. Get one in 9mm with the AS trigger and you won't be disappointed. Very accurate gun.
