Glock 20SF and Spring Upgrade

I just picked up a brand new Glock 20SF which I am assuming is a Gen 4 model. I ordered some Buffalo Bore Ammo since I will be in bear country in Montana from time to time, and they state that some of the higher powered ammo may have a problem cycling the slide. The company recommends a stiffer spring to fix that problem.

Do you guys recommend a stiffer spring, and if so, which spring do you recommend? I saw that the Glock Store sells different springs (I believe it says the 17lb spring is the factory spring). If I do change the spring, what effect will it have when I shoot regular 10mm ammo?

I listened to Jay and Blue (I would be an idiot if I didn't) and I have a Lone Wolf barrel coming which should be here in December per my store. It seems the Lone Wolf barrel is backordered (as was the Storm Lake I tried to order first, but there was no ETA on that one). In the meantime I will be shooting American Eagle 180 grain 10mm. I also ordered the last of EA's 10mm 200 grain ammo which I won't shoot until I get the upgraded barrel.

i went with either a 20 or 22lb spring and it works on everything ive fed it.
also,its a gen 3. iirc, they dont make a gen 4 g20 and no gen4 is a SF. since they have replaceable backstraps, all gen4s are SF capible.

The stock springs have worked fine for me. But you could go with a 20 lb if you want. That won't affect watered down ammo. And as SRT said, all 20s, 21, 29s, and 30s are Gen 3s

10mm is about the minimum I would have for griz country. But it is better than nothing. Might want to bring a 44mag too, if you have one. A 454 is even better. Not to get into a whole other Bear thread. :laugh:

Black bears... G20 is fine. Brown bears.... leave the G20 at home. On the SLIM chance you'd have to actually use it to defend your life, you're undergunned.

Two words... WHEEL GUN

The cheapest thing to do is go find a nice used Super Redhawk in .44 mag, $300-$400, and load it with some proven hard-cast brown bear rounds.

The more expensive route is to go find a good short or medium barreled guide gun in the $500-$900 range (NIB) in .454 cassul, .460SW, .480ruger, or .500SW.

I always carry in the woods, evevn in Florida... where the .22WMR is probably the most useful caliber. G20's are GREAT for Wild hogs here in Florida (along with gators, coyotes, and other pesky varmits), and although I've never had to fire at a black bear in the appalachais, I've seen several up on the Appalachain Trail. Most of them seemed to be somewhat used to human interaction and minded their own business... of course, I didn't stick around to ask them if they were interested in me.

For some reason I thought the G20SF was a gen 4 due to something I read in the manual. No problem, the gen 3s are good.

I also have a S&W 629 which shouldn't have a problem shooting the Buffalo Bore Reduced Recoil .44 Mag. Almost as powerful as their heavy .44 Mag ammo, and the 629 won't have any problems shooting it. I don't have a 454, and no plans to get one right now.

I have a S&W 629, and bought some Buffalo Bore Reduced Recoil .44 Mag ammo which should do the job. Hopefully it will not be needed, but it doesn't hurt to be prepared.

Take the 629 and I would go with HEAVY 44 Mag. The heaviest hitting possible. CorBon Bone Crushers are good. Buffalo Bore Heavy 44s are great. You won't feel the recoil if the bear is coming out you. Trust me.

I went with the reduced recoil because I heard it was better for the 629 than the heavy 44 mag ammo. Buffalo Bore's website seems to confirm that for some models (I know my gun isn't scandium which is one to avoid with the heavy 44 mag).
