FNP40 or FiveSeven

Post by FNForever » 26 Sep 2011, 13:24

I want to surprise my father with a new gun. The BX at the Air Force base im stationed at is having a FNH promotion event and will be knocking off 10% of the cost of all guns made by FN. These guns are tax free as well and will include 5 magazines as part of the promo. The price point wins for the FNP but the FiveSeven has many selling points as well....Which to chose???? Oh its gonna run $410 for the FNP40 and $930 for the FiveSeven

As much as I would like to buy my father every gun on the planet, i have $1000 to spend. I was gonna go with the FNP40 and have night sights installed but the more I see the five-seven the more I think he would like it. He has arthritis in his hands and considering the recoil comparison between 40 and 5.7x28mm, the five-seven seems like a better choice. Ammo for that gun is not cheap though; especially that S4 and Protector stuff. They're both great guns and they both have they're intended uses so it is going to be a tough call. He doesn't even know about the FiveSeven, but he is very familiar with 9mm, .40, and .45ACP pistols. Gonna make the decision on Saturday, pick it up on Thursday and have a range report posted on Friday for whichever one i get.

If he has arthritis, a 40 would be one of the last on my list

Ditto srt-4. No comparison in how they shoot. I'd go with the FsN for Dad. Most of the time he can shoot with 197, and the cost is pretty reasonable. Keep the S4M for defense and pig hunting. He will love the 5.7

My pops really enjoys his Ruger Single Six in .22WMR. Hes always talking about how under-rated .22mag is and i agree completely. Seems like 5.7 ammo is everything the .22WMR is and more in a reliable semi auto platform. Very hard to find reliable .22WMR semi-auto handguns. Theres only a couple made and they dont have a good rep. I am leaning more towards the five seven the more i think about it. 20 or even 30 rds of 5.7x28 sounds like alot of fun. I hear that this round is flat out to 100yds from the five seven. Is this true or is this hype? From that short of a barrel i would not expect that type of performance from anything unless you adjust for drop.

Elite 5.7mm ammo has about triple the muzzle energy and double the velocity of .22 WMR pistol bullets.

I bought my dad a FNX40. He is a "one gun" type of guy and he really enjoys it. I think he's a little too old fashioned for 5.7x28, and he can find .40 ammo anywhere. If arthritice is a concern and your dad doesn't mind having a gun that is a little out of the oridinary, I'd go with the FsN. Interesting correlation, my dad's only pistol was a Ruger Single Six in .22WMR for almost 30 years. First pistol I ever shot and look forward to inhereting it... one day many years from now of course.

I, on the other hand, dont find much use for .40. I think its a compromise caliber, but +P .45ACP in 200+gr will ALWAYS be my first choice in defensive caliber.

Got both. FNP 40 for me and FsN for my Dad. Recoil on the FsN is comparible to a 32Auto but with a louder bang. Neither I or anyone else at the range could tell the difference in sound between the 40 and the 5.7x28 rounds. Very smooth shooting handgun. I actually held a decent group at 25yds off hand. About a 5" group standing unsupported for 20 rounds. The FNP 40 is supprisingly accurate as well. I shot it more accurately than my M&P. Got 2 boxes of Protector II on the way and waiting to order some S4M

Hate hearing the comparisons to 22WMR. I do however see the similarities to 22 Hornet. 22Hornet runs 3000ish fps/ 500-800ft/lbs energy/ 45 grain bullet. That is out of a rifle barrel too. Everyone(the idiots at least) always quotes the competitions rifle ballistics to the FsN handgun ballistics. The 22 Hornet rifle ballsitics are comparable to the PS90. The 22 Hornet's range is limited to around 200yds to be effective.
