Yugo M57 Field strip / takedown guide / disassembly

Post by Visceral_Malice » 18 Aug 2011, 18:06

I figured I'd contribute a little something to the forum since you guys have been so helpful to me.

Basically in June I ended up with a little unexpected surprise in the form of a Yugo M57
TT-33 clone. I had made an order from classic arms and ordered a rifle, the M57, and some tokarev ammo. 2 days later my stuff comes in minus the M57 and I had never been charged for it. I decided I would wait on it and purchase it in a few months. I then bought myself a little birthday present in the form of an XD-357. The next day my dealer calls me up and says I got another package from classic arms in and apparently they mistakenly thought I wanted one of their special chrome plated models that are special order. Anyway, I couldn't turn it down once I saw it.

Field stripping it was a bit confusing for me at first, especially because of the complete lack of any documentation anywhere, which is why I decided to do this.

I cleaned up the leather holster with some clorox wipes and it looked only a little beat up afterward.

It came with the holster and 2 mags

First step to stripping is removing the slide stop retaining pin. I use the mag to pop mine loose.
Image

Image

Next step is to pop out the slide stop pictured here
Image

Push this pin on this side
Image

Slide stop will start to come out and you'll have to wiggle it loose
Image

Removed!
Image

Now that pesky slide will come right off
Image

The slide comes right off
Image

Bottom view of the slide
Image

The guide rod is a 2 part assembly with a hinge in the middle. It shifts downward during cycling instead of the barrel shifting upward, so its sort of a fixed barrel. Pull that guide rod out, so we can get to the barrel.
Image

No more guide rod
Image

I'm not sure what the actual name of this part is, but I'm going to call it the slide cap. Give this thing a 180 and pull it off.
Image

The barrel has a loop on it that the slide stop locks into and it will be sticking up.
Image

We'll need to push it forward to remove the barrel
Image

The barrel will now be free to slide out of the front of the slide and voila, the slide is stripped.
Image

Now for the frame

You can see the hammer assembly on the top of the frame
Image

It will just lift right off
Image

I know its kind of hard to see, but on the left in the photo in the magwell, there is a metal bar. You need to use a cleaning rod or something similar to slide it to the opposite side to remove the hand guard.
Image

Same deal on this side. Slide this piece aside and remove the other hand guard.
Image

Last step is removing the safety
Image

I pull it up
Image

and it comes right off
Image

Done!
Image

I'll tack on a reassembly shortly.

Ok now for reassembly.

Safety back on. It won't stay tightly until the hand guard is back on.
Image

Put the right hand guard back on first
Image

Slide the metal retainer back in locking position
Image

Left hand guard and use a rod to slide the retainer back and this will lock the safety on also
Image

Hammer assembly drops back in
Image

Slide reassembly

Make sure the loop on the barrel is down
Image

Slide it in
Image

Pull the loop up
Image

Cap back on the slide and twist
Image

Reinstall the guide rod as pictured. The round part of the back of the rod needs to be up.
Image

Another pic
Image

Put the slide back on
Image

Notice in the picture the slide and back of the frame will not line up perfectly without pressure
Image

Take the slide stop
Image

Push the long pin back into the front hole
Image

Push the slide back just ever so slightly until the slide lock can go all the way through and come through on the other side
Image

Once its through, we replace the retaining pin
Image

And we're done

Visceral, use some saddle soap on the holster, I bet it will look brand new after words - nice find, good job.

I have a couple and they are GREAT! The chrome ones look even more awesome than I imagined. Thanks for your efforts!

Yeah, I was fully intent on sending it back until I saw it. It looked way better than I thought it would and is definitely worth the extra $80. Plus I didn't have to do any of the cosmoline removal.

That's definitely worth about 40 bucks a gun alone. A full cosmo strip is not easy and the "hang a gun under a bright light trick" didn't work for me.

I suspect they chrome the more scratched/rusted up M57's taking a non-handpick weapon and turning it into what could be considered the nicest. A genius business idea for sure!
