Laser sight

Post by aimtrue » 13 Dec 2012, 12:56

Greetings

I would like to hear your opinions about having a laser sight on a FNX-40.

Is is effective? Overkill? A waste of money?

If of value, can you recommend a brand and model?

What's your application.

Range fun/training/SD/HD/Carry/Car etc.?

If you train and understand it, then I would recommend it.

I can only recommend lasers in a VERY specific situation/application. And it would be the above.

Training is vital. Your eyes are drawn to the laser, taking up mental and optical resources. Train to use it as a tool, not to let it use your eyes. See more. If you do not see, you cannot react.

99.99% of people I have met and shot with that have used lasers do not know how to use them properly.

Pretty much as blue said. Learn to shoot the pistol without it, else it will become a crutch that will hinder your progress. Lasers are also useful for dry firing drills as you can see precisely how much your input to the pistol is affecting your POI.

After checking various laser/flashlight sights, I chose the modestly priced Fire-Field Interchangeable combo kit. The mounting installed easily onto the FNX-40 rail.

I first screwed the flashlight into the housing and was pleased at the brightness and distance the beam of light projected. Next, I unscrewed the flashlight and screwed in the laser.

I configured the green laser beam directly in front of the front sight aiming it at a target placed at 10 yards and then locked the four set screws.

The entire process took only a few short minutes.

At the range I placed two targets on a frame 10 yards from my shooting position. My initial shots were aimed using the front sight and not the laser.

I then used the laser for my next shots

There is not much difference in my accuracy using either sighting.

However, the laser is an excellent means for attaining fast acquisition on target. At this point, I intend to continue using the front sight the majority of time and will use the laser if and when I deem it necessary.

I will mount the flashlight whenever I carry the pistol during night hours.

I took the comments of blueorison to heart regarding training and the use of a laser as a tool and not a replacement for my normal shooting eye mechanics.

What I have determined is that for short defensive distances I should continue to either point shoot or use my front sight to target – completely disregarding the use of the laser for setup. There does not seem to be enough time to use the laser for immediate short distance defensive shooting.

However, when a target is beyond 10 yards, I quickly establish with the laser a field for aiming. In a fraction of time, I automatically shift and focus my eyes to the 3-dot sight system and begin to fire as my point of aim reaches the target.

The results of this technique has been fairly good in the limited shooting I have done. I hope to improve my skills to the extent that my use of the laser will reach the level of my traditional accuracy.

An added note, I have purchased a FNS-40 and mounted a laser. This pistol is now my daily carry gun. The FNX-40 has become my bedside gun with a flashlight mounted on it.

This is a photo of a 15 yard target peppered by my FNS-40 using a quick laser view to set up my shots:

I think it is a good start.

Good shooting, solid mindset.

Carry on, sir.

One final post from me on this thread.

I could not contain myself and went to the range again.

This is the final target I shot using the laser with my last fourteen round magazine at a 10 yard target.
