Trijicon MR06 or Fastfire 3?

Post by Snaproll » 08 Jul 2012, 05:18

I'm not sure if this is the right forum to post this, but here goes...

I pick up my FNP-45 Tactical on Tuesday. I have the option between these two sights. The Trijicon is in stock and I ordered the Burris which will be in on Tuesday.

I have the Fastfire 2 on my Fiveseven. It has locking screws on the very back. The FF2 is workable but the locking screws drift the dot while you are tightening them, and are a PITA to use. Obviously if this is what comes in (the FF2), going with the Trijicon would be a nobrainer because of the rear sight getting in the way of the locking screws.

The new Fast Fire 3 does not have the locking screws in the back and sounds complementary to the Trijicon for about $350 less.

I've searched the net and on similar posts and the general feeling is the "Trijicon is worth the extra money"... yet no one ever gives any sound reason why, other than "it's Trijicon".

Ok folks, a red dot is a red dot. As long as the FF3 works, can be sighted, holds zero and is reliable why would I WANT to spend $350 more for a Trijicon?

I don't mind spending the extra $$$ if there is a solid reason. Is the FF3 more fragile? Poorer coatings? Not hold zero etc?

Also, would the FF3 need a different mounting plate that what comes with the FNP?

I understand that the FF3 comes with a sunshade (which can't be used with the FNP because of the rear sight) but does it have a cover like the FF2? I also read the Trijicon does not have a cover, but is one available? I really like the cover on the FF2 on the Fiveseven for protecting the optics.

Any input would be greatly appeciated...

I can't comment on the FF3, but I do have a FF2 and a Trijicon RMR. The FFII has been mounted on my Remington 870 and worked fine through hundreds of rounds. It currently lives on my AR15 and again, it works fine.

The RMR lives on my FNP-45T. That particular gun tends to occasionally throw the brass straight back at the RMR. It's been hit countless times directly on the lens and has yet to show even one scratch. I have not tried that with the FFII and I would not. I have no definitive proof that the FF would not stand up as well (because I haven't tried it), but the RMR just feels tougher.

I now that doesn't directly answer the question, but it's just my $0.02...

Thanks for the reply. There are a lot of posts, but nothing really solid to back up "the Trijicon is better". It definitely would be better than the FF2, but the FF3 sounds like it closes the gap.
