FNAR handloading

Post by no one » 13 Mar 2010, 18:36

I will be receiving my FN-AR soon, and wondered if anyone has any recommendations of good handloads with the 168 Sierra Matchking to try?

C'mon, someone has to have tried some loads for this rifle.. If not the 168 grain bullet, has anyone had any luck with other bullet weights? Everything I have heard indicates that these rifles shoot wonderfully with factory ammo, so it stands to reason that with good handloads tuned to the rifle, they would be outstandingly accurate. I'm just looking for a starting point.

I have loads for the SPR A3G, and ones that I will be trying in my soon to be received FS2K, but just want a hint of where to start for the FN-AR. Thanks.

It appears that either:
1. No one has an FNAR
2. No one reloads
3. This is a dead forum...very little participation.

Only a few people have the FNAR on here that I know of.

Commercial Brass (Winchester & Remington) trimmed to 2.005
168 gr Match King
43 gr Varget
CCI 200 Primer
OAL 2.775

No chrony yet, but performs similar to 168gn Mil. Quite accurate. Easy out to 400 yards. Haven't pushed it any further yet, but plan to.

NATO Brass
147 gr MilSurp
43 gr Varget
OAL 2.775
Slight Taper Crimp

Good general round for 100 - 200 yards, falls outta the sky @ 300 (at least it seems). No chrony yet, sorry.

On 07 April I was doing some load testing and found the following load to shoot extremely well:
168 grain Nosler custom competition BTHP
LC77 brass with primer pockets uniformed, and flash holes deburred
Federa 210M primers
42.5 grains of Varget
C.O.A.L. 2.810

This load shot well under one inch at 200 yards. Sandbags front and rear (no bi-pod), Redfield 4-12X40 scope with the Accu-range reticle.

To say that I was pleased with groups under one inch at 200 yards would be an understatement.

Interesting. I had 14 165 gr GameKings laying in a box, so I loaded them up at 2.805 OAL with 43 gr Varget in Remington brass with CCI 200 primers. Hopefully I can get out to the range tomorrow...

EDIT: Also, my FNAR is slightly different with adjustments to the gas system due to having a little work done. It was threaded by Mark at Short Action Customs in Ohio ( http://www.shortactioncustoms.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ). The break is an AAC 18T. It was threaded for this break with no washers installed for just around $100. No noticeable affect on accuracy beyond filling your sinuses with each shot:
