NRA life membership

Post by VeTTeMaNC486 » 09 May 2013, 11:05

I graduated from college this past weekend and decided to use some of the money I received to take advantage of the excellent deal the NRA has going on life memberships. :thumb: Honestly I had not even heard of this deal until two days ago. This is the first time I have had a membership with them and I am excited :D .

congrats. I heard about it at the show. I think it is a prudent way to invest. I do want to do it, also.

I am not sure, but as a life member, at one time I had ability to offer 'gift' life membership to someone for something like 30 cents on the dollar. Not sure if I still have that ability, but I will check, in case anyone is interested.

I think this recent fight has proven in my mind the power and importance of the NRA. And the importance of putting money behind causes you believe in.

This year I took the money I normally give to the national GOP and split it between the state GOP and the NRA. RNC gets nothing, until they wise up a bit.

Regular Life memberships are currently 30 cents on the dollar. $300.

I recently updated my life membership to "Endowment."

They need all the members they can get. Join up!

Anyone have a link to that? I'd upgrade mine, but on their site it only goes up to 5 years for $100

The only way to get to it is to sign up for the stupid sticker, and probably unwanted junk mail.

I'd almost bet that if you go there tomorrow, it will expire the next day. And then the next. And the next.
I may be wrong though.

They have more than proved their worth in the fight. Sure they aren't perfect. Blaming video games was stupid of them, but they got the right result in the last battle. That alone makes me look past any deficiencies. That being said, I also give to GOA, SAF, and other local firearms causes. NRA is not end all be all. Just the most effective use of your dollars right now.

:skep: What?

Who here is cheap? And how dare you tell anyone what to do with their money, or how much they spend? Every donation helps. And what you are saying is that you were a cheap ass in 82 when you just gave $2?

And just a little math. That is 31 years. That equates to $3225 year average, if you just barely scrape into six figures ($100K) during that time. Not saying you don't give that, just saying that seems like it is out of reach of a lot of people, particularly these days.

For the record I give quite a lot (five figures a year to all the charities and political organizations I donate to), but that is me, I can afford to, and I do it voluntarily. It is one thing to say these guys are a good cause to donate to. It is another to be 'pissed' when you feel a life membership is easy money for anyone. You are pissed by that, tough.

Tone it down. You embarrass yourself with asinine comments like that.

Cheap? It's cheap to buy a life membership spur of the moment when I didn't have money allocated to it to begin with? How could you possibly know everyone's financial situations here? Last time I checked a donation to anywhere was voluntary and not mandatory, I bet the NRA is happy as a pig in <profanity> to get my $300.

You just made my list, and it's not the good list.. :furious:

Public forum people, play nice.

Give IF you can. If you cannot, maybe there are other ways to donate? Maybe one could donate time at a gun show where you are trying to get the word out to people to contact their reps?

But telling others how to spend their money & calling them names when their spending doesn't reflect your own, that is a huge overstep & good way to start an argument.

I've always wanted a life membership with the NRA but the fact of raising 3 kids ages 4-17 pretty much on my own, makes even the $300 dollars sometimes a stretch. I work a second job just to make sure my kids never have want or need because they come first above all else. I had to save up for over a year just to get my FSN. Yes you could call me cheap for wanting to take this deal, or you could call me a financially responsible parent. Sometimes when I did have the funds available and could have paid the full regular price I didn't because I am a cheap penny pinching bastard that makes sure I always have funds for my kids emergencies.

There was no intended malice or ill intent with my original posting..neither was there an intention to inspire a pissing contest..however...reality is such that we are dealing with an extraordinarily expensive hobby/pastime. Anyone that can afford a SCAR carbine, PS90, FSN...that isn't a duty firearm given the cost of optics, ammo, toys, ought be able to scrape up the full $1K for an NRA life membership...at least my view is that the preservation of rights to pursue a life long interest isn't free...each to their ability....but the cost of that right may hurt...and the burden ought be shared..period..no intention to be pejorative...but $1K is less than any FNH long are I know of that I would bet almost everyone here owns one of.

I am sure you will be and thank you for joining....it important for everyone to join....the point I was trying to make is that shooting is an expensive hobby for most of us in addition to what we may own for self defense....I would hope the everyone that can afford to, for the price equivalent of one firearm could invest in preserving rights. If the $700 saved off the cost of a life membership could be allocated to your State Association, or any other shooting related organization of your choice it would certainly help...and anyone else that can do so ought consider it.....living in Illinois I can share first hand experience with regard to what can be taken away...or in the case of CCW never permitted in the first place.

We got our daughter her Life Membership when she was like a week old. They had a really good deal going at $500.00 to renew Jay's & bring someone on board 11 years ago.

Still haven't gotten the boys theirs yet because I am waiting for another sweet deal to come along.

I will never get one because I have personal issues with the NRA but they do fight the fight when there is press involved :(

One point that I have not seen made is the value of having a member for life. Even if life memberships were selling for $100, the fact that the NRA has dramatically increased their membership, and will have many of those members on their roles for life, gives the NRA additional clout and power. If you represent 5 million members instead of 2 million, I think the politicians have to take notice of that.

Nothing but cheap? I do not even have a job. Maybe you should learn something about the person you are insulting instead of being ignorant. I could care less how much money you have given, you think that is supposed to impress me? And, no, 300 is not 500 rounds of ammo for me. I will not pay that price for anything but .308 and larger anymore.

If I was able to afford to do so that would be one thing. I purchased my PS90 years ago when I had a job and the money to do so. My Fiveseven was given to me as a gift, as I could not afford to buy one but the person (fiance :D ) knew that I really wanted one. 300 dollars for a life membership when my monthly income is less than that 300 doing side jobs to make SOME money is a sizable contribution IMO. :thumb:

Well my life membership package just arrived in the mail. I had signed up for installment payments just before the $300 promotion started.

I thought about calling the NRA and having them switch me over to the $300 plan, but then I started thinking about all the gun-grabbers, potential legislation going through congress and the various states. I finally just said frack it: I can keep sending letters & emails to my politicians, continue to post gun-friendly videos on my youtube channel and keep demonstrating the kind of fun my non-gun friends can have in shooting sports, buttt...

The NRA can do a lot more than I can do. I don't agree with everything they say/do, but they are an important voice (IMHO) in the fight to protect our Second Amendment rights. You may say I'm crazy for throwing away an extra $700, but we all do what we can. I'm very fortunate and happen to have the funds at this point in time - I may not in a few months - and I don't want to look back as more and more states pass draconian laws like NY, CT, CO enacted and have to say "could have, would have, should have."

Just my $0.02.

Oh, and it took about 10 weeks to get my life membership package.

Similar thing happened years back before I got my life membership. They had a promotional $500 if I remember correctly, but I had just signed up with the then brand new EPL program, so I didn't qualify. Well I got a raise, and a big bonus, so I had some cash to use on a Life membership. I thought about asking NRA if I could pay off EPL to the $500 level. Then I thought the same thing you did, and bit the bullet. Well worth it.

Almost to Presidents circle now. By next February I am hoping to be blessed enough to be a part of it.

For you fellow life members, if you got some money burning a hole in your pocket, you can pick up Endowment membership for $250.00. and a free travel bag. It normally goes for $1000.

https://www.nra-2013.org/ No clue how long it will take to get the bag or for your status to change on your NRA page, but I bought mine on the 28th and still no change.

It's for a worthy cause - I upgraded too.

With all the states that are writing new gun restrictions into law, the NRA really does need the support.

It took 9 days for my Endowment membership to show up on my NRA home page. Went to the link again and said that I could go from Endowment to Patron for $300. Normal price is $1500. If the offer is still valid in a month or 2 I will upgrade again.

Ouch. They must be really backlogged if you haven't gotten them yet. No clue how long it will take to get my bag and Endowment material. Not in a rush, but I want to see what that bag is like.

If you are a life member, just go to https://www.nra-2013.org/ and enter your info. You will get the same deal as the rest of us. $250 for Endowment, then $300 more for Patron. I didn't get the Patron deal until my Endowment membership processed on my NRA home page and that took 9 days for me.

It took them about 2 months to get my Life membership packet to me, but that was earlier in the year. Not sure if the delay has shortened or is taking longer. The NRA.com site says 8-10 weeks. If it's over that, I would call them.

I'm already patron. Looking for discount on prez circle. Not showing up but that could be my phone not showing page correctly. Have to wait till I get home and check.

Ahh, ok. What level do you get that option? Always that you needed to be a Benefactor to join the circle and the other higher level groups.

Yes. Sorry not clear. I am a benefactor. What I meant was that I already had patron status.

Looks like they are moving people through ranks. So I'm sure when I get back home and check there will be a discount for that. Also I have never set up my account online. Just didn't want info on there for good reason. Now it seems it doesn't matter.

No worries. Was just curious was all. What's the membership price for the president's circle? I know that can't be cheap. I'm sure with the current state of things, the NRA will take what ever money they can get. This price reduction on memberships will eventually get them caught up and it probably won't be seen again for a long time.

Seems each upgrade is same price it seems. So this would be the year for you to bump up your memberships.

Endowment was 250 and Patron is 300 if I choose to upgrade. No clue on Benefactor, but yes, if you're going to upgrade, this is the year/time to do it. My guess they won't discount memberships for a long time after this is over.

Pin, patch, window decal, and I think a certificate for life. The range bag is for Endowment and higher with the current membership discount.

Just curious, but what 'benefits' are there to all of these different 'steps' of the lifetime memberships (like patron and benefactor etc?) besides possibly bragging rights?
At any point in these levels do they STOP actually sending you twice weekly mailers begging for yet MORE money?
I'm just curious.

I've never got any mail from them other than my membership packets. All the spam mail can be stopped from the nra member home page and just opt out from all contacting services.

From what I've read, the higher up membership levels get you invites to NRA benefit dinners etc and special recognition at said gatherings. FWIW, I've been a life member since Feb and endowment for over a month and have not got any type of invites to said gatherings

When you go to the big dinner held during the yearly show you get to pay a sh!t ton more money for your tickets. But then you end up with some pretty heavy hitters at your dinner table.

I have gotten asked by the local ILA guy to come to a few get togethers. Got to meet with my US representative and Senators at one earlier this year. It's really a small pond up here though, so probably not that big of deal in relation to if you life in a larger populated part of the country.

If you are looking for a dollar for dollar payout, you aren't going to find it. However I take great pride in being a part of an organization that has really done a lot to expand gun rights in this country and has taken a tip of the spear role recently against the gun grabbing agendas.

All good answers, I suppose.
Most of you 'old timers' with the forum know my hard spot with them. I'm still finding it very difficult to support them although I believe that they are truly trying to do what is right. Perhaps it was just my bad luck that the few I had the misfortune to speak with didn't have a clue what they were actually talking about. I truly don't know.
Until my heart softens though, I fear I'll have to keep spending my money where I feel it is better put to use. State level organizations may not have the clout, but they still need the funds.

That being said, I do give to other state and national gun groups as well.

I didn't say they weren't effective. I simply said that they didn't have the 'clout' that NRA does. And like any smaller organization, still needs funding.
And since I still have a HUGE hard spot with the NRA and their misuse of funds, especially with their thrice weekly mailings directed toward the common everyday member, their incessant phone calls begging for money to fight 'bills that don't exist', etc, I still choose to spend my money locally.
When the NRA decides to go after FOPA or decides to get the NFA overturned, I'll jump on board. But when they call me and tell me that my 'hunting and fishing rights are being threatened'? Um...no. When the idiots that work there have no idea what it is that they're calling about, the organization as a whole suffers.
And when you ask to be taken off the mailing list three times and it never happens, it goes beyond frustrating.
You try to support a group and you see them spend more in mass mailings in six months than you pay in dues and you begin to realize, they aren't about organizing the people, they're about amassing the people's money.

Sounds like you got some fancy bags. Mine just says NRA on the front right of the bag. No luggage tags or anything. I'm an Endowment member as well. The bag seems to be well built and will end up being a range bag for me.

I bought my Life Membership on the last day before the $300 deal expired (May 8 or 9?) and got my Life Member packet yesterday. It appears that the 6-8 week lead time is accurate.

I forgot to post this, but I did receive my NRA duffel bag last week.

I guess my experience has been different.

The mail is pretty annoying but all it took me is one quick phone call to shut that off. You can email them at [email protected] or dial 800-NRA-3888 and request to be placed on the "Do Not Promote" list. It was pretty easy for me to unsubscribe from their emails too, and I've never received a phone call from them.

Anyway, the mail is annoying but the NRA wouldn't be doing it if it didn't have a positive ROI. And I'm sure the NRA would love to overturn the NFA but it's not that simple and the NRA is not that powerful. There are only 5 million NRA members, out of the 100+ million gun owners in the USA.

The NRA has done a LOT to advance gun rights, and the recent recall elections in Colorado are a good example of that. If you want to send money to the NRA to be used purely for lobbying purposes, go through the ILA (http://www.nraila.org/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;).

Aside from the NRA, the only other big player for gun rights is the Second Amendment Foundation (SAF). I'm an SAF member as well, and like the NRA they have done a LOT to advance gun rights in the USA. I'll warn you though, the SAF sends lots of mail just like the NRA, and you have to give them a call and ask not to receive mail from them. Aside from that, they're a great group:
