Colorado theater shooter, James Holmes, got sentenced to the maximum possible 3,318 years in prison. In other words, life with no parole.

Question though, why?
If there is no chance (for a criminal) of rehabilitation & someone becoming a useful member of society, why keep them alive? Just kill him/her & be done with it.
I can understand life without parole if it is part of a plea agreement but a straight up conviction?
I know the death penalty was on the table for this but it was a split jury & so they couldn't pursue it as per state law but this still seems like a waste of time/resources to me.

Finally got back out SCUBA diving today. I stopped diving more than a decade ago because I got transferred inland; no where to play but no time either. Moved to a small town with a reservoir & asked about a search & rescue dive team. Got on the team & since they were already training new divers, I went with them for a few refresher dives. Good news, all of my gear still fit & passed inspections and all of my tanks passed the hydro tests. Bad news, my computers needed new batteries & a mask fell apart when I tried to clean it. Batteries & 1 piece of faulty gear after 10+ years in storage, I can handle that. :thumb:

That's uber cool!

There are caves, here, underwater. People die down there and the rescue team has to go retrieve their bodies.

Yeah cave diving hell fucking no.

Even worse are the Sump divers. Basically you go into a regular cave that has water flowing through it, you get to the back/end of the cave where the water is coming from.
Guys then dive it.

Sump diving and it's so deadly it makes normal cave diving seem like diving in a swimming pool. Every sump diver my dad has known over the years has died doing it.

Re: Completely unrelated

Posted: 28 Jun 2016, 10:01
by Rapier1772
I'd dive a cave with the proper training & equipment but that sump diving (never heard of it before) sounds like intentional suicide, about like diving drainage canals. Nope.

Re: Completely unrelated

Posted: 29 Jun 2016, 06:19
by Oldbindlestiff
Cave diving is demanding enough! I certified years ago in Florida. Lots of training and even more equipment is required. As one of my instructors used to say, buy the best equipment you can find because you don't want your tombstone to read "Here lies (insert your name here). Too cheap to buy the best". It was an experience that I don't regret but probably would not bother with again if I could roll back the hands of time. By nature, cavers are explorers. Pushing the limits is the excitement of the discipline. Sadly, far too many find that limit.

Glad to see you getting wet again! Be safe.

Got hold of some purple potatoes at work. They are about the size of reds.
Image
Never seen or tried them before so I grabbed a few. Made tater pancakes & am currently making something else (roasted garlic something something).
They taste & cook like regular taters but there is virtually no shelf life to these things. Straight from farm & a few were starting to go bad within 24hrs.
Someone said they were hybrids & another person said the taters were originally imported from South America but yes, they are actually supposed to be purple; I don't really care, I just wanted to try them. Apparently there are other colored ones out there too so I'm curious about also trying those out.

$300.00 but it must be done with the accurizing package since entire gun break down is needed and the coating changes how the internals engage. Also I have found with the NP3+ that the slide when the pistol is fired moves much faster and smoother. Our HD magazine springs and HD recoil springs are needed to ensure proper feeding.

Learned something new (to me) today, Idaho has scorpions & they're fast, sneaky little buggers. Out shooting in the boonies today I found one near the targets, scooped it up in cup someone had left & carried it back to the truck. The whole time it played dead & didn't move. Dumped it out on my hood, went to grab my phone to take a pic, turned around & it was gone.
I had heard & read numerous times that they are here but hadn't seen one before today.

Never read that they were that tricky though, the scorpion played opossum :D

Re: Completely unrelated

Mostly yellow, kinda small. Not including the claws or the tail, I bet the body could have fit on a 50cent piece.

Looking at pics for this region, it kinda looked like the yellow ground scorpion but with a little more black to it. The pics for the northern scorpion show one with a little too much black coloring. Maybe a half-breed? :D

Re: Completely unrelated

Well Bic lighter length body, black and scary looking=wasp bite.

Small 50cent piece size body, amber colored deadly AF.

According to the interwebs, none of the common species in Idaho are all that poisonous to humans - sure it hurts but they're not deadly. Of course, that is just the common species & doesn't include any scorpions someone brought in & released either by intention or accident (i.e. hitch hiker on the undercarriage).

It was the only one I've seen in Idaho so far and I have no intentions of handling one by hand in any case so I'm not too concerned. I was using a stick just to pick up the board I found it under but my fear was of finding rattlesnakes. So, now I have another reason to be leery of lifting boards to use as targets :D Still won't stop me from doing it though

Yup. That's why I referred to it as "interwebs" & made sure I mentioned that it was only in reference to the common species.
Without a pic, I can't get any more specific as to what kind it was.
Maybe I'll find another one now that I'll be looking for them? I'll get a pic of that one if/when I do.

Y'all know those pencil torches right? Does anyone know if there is something like that for freezing instead of heating/burning?

Admittedly I'm just being a bit of a sadist but I want to freeze a black widow & her egg sack without blowing them all over.
An inverted can of compressed air like Dust Off can expel liquid capable of that but it's too forceful, will probably blow her away. Maybe I should just practice a bit?

I should note this is at work & I'm not supposed to be goofing around like that. Also, she's on a fuel line, hence the freezing & not laser burning.
