FiveseveN CCW ammo

Post by NWmissouriman » 04 Jun 2013, 20:29

I'm new to this forum so please go easy. I believe I attempted a post like this, although I did it in the wrong category, however I don't think it went through. Anyways, after sitting on a few thousand rounds of federal ammo for what seemed like an eternity, my FS is FINALLY on its way and should be here friday. My old man just got his in last week. That being said, I intend on using mine for my concealed carry gun and I am looking for a box or two of reasonably priced ammo that would be good to use for self defense....an Elite Ammo variant or something of the sort. If anyone knows where I could get a box or two of something that would be good for its intended purpose, please let me know. Also, as I stated before, I have a couple thousand rounds of federal ammo and I would be willing to trade a few boxes if anyone is interested. Thanks!

I would suggest EliteAmmunition... I personally cannot recommend a certain type from EA, but someone will I'm sure. I use SS198, for whatever that is worth, as a stop gap until I can get something from EA.

Hey thanks guys. I just signed up to Elite's emailing list. Hopefully it doesn't take as long for them to start making ammunition again as long as it sounds like it might. From everything I have read and the videos I have watched, it sure seems like their stuff is the best of the best. I'd ask you (JollyRogers) where you got your SS198 but I'm pretty sure that that would be a dumb question due to the fact that it is probably sold out. On a side note, the specs that I've seen on the SS198 seem like it would be a good round and if I can ever get my hands on any thats a descent price I wouldn't hesitate to use that for now. Thanks again....and anyone else who can shed some light on the situation or help me out please let me know!

As I write this, your best bet is SS198. Although nominally for LE use only, that's just FN's internal restriction - it's totally good to go for anyone that can get hold of it. Check the usual suspects, such as our for-sale forums here or Gun (the site that makes you) Broker.

Do not write off the SS197, however. It is a very good round overall, and indications are that it has actually improved somewhat performance-wise in it's latest lead-free incarnation. It may not be the BEST option out there but ANY round in the tube carried with you beats the safe queen sitting at home due to lack of ammo.

Of course, once EA gets up and running again you should obtain some of their products. No other ammo comes close in the FiveSeveN (and many have tried). My personal favorite is ProtecTOR - I'm old-school that way.

Another question on this topic. If I HAD to use my FS in self defense, and it was loaded with ss198, would I get in trouble because it is "restricted to LE/Military"? I am not LE or Military.

No, it is restricted by FN. It is not restricted by federal or state law (though I'm no attorney, so I would advise checking your specific state law to very that).

SS198 is perfectly okay for civilian use. FNH is a wierd - and VERY European - company and has some funny notions of who is and is not worthy of using it's products. Frankly, I'm amazed FNH "allows" any of it's products to be sold to mere civilians but that's a rant for another time. FNH would prefer you NOT have or use SS198, but there is nothing with the force of law preventing you from acquiring, owning, or using SS198. FNH can require it's dealers to not sell to civilians (that's still their official stance) but there are many ways around that, witness the copious quantities of SS198 on GB.

The proviso here is that laws do vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction in regards to what can be carried and how. Just one example that pops into mind is the restriction on civilian use of hollow points for carry in New Jersey. SS198 is technically a hollow point, and although we know it is not a "functional" hollow point in the traditional sense try telling that to a cop or DA in Jersey. Be thoroughly aware of the laws in your locality, and when in doubt consult competant legal counsel.

Having said that, SS198 should be good to go in about 98% of the country. If you can afford to get some and it is compatible with your legal environment, carry away!

Thank you for the replies. Here in Missouri we are pretty conservative and there arent any stipulations on hollow points in my area.....St Louis might be a different story but i avoid that city like the plague. Thanks again!

Hey now, just because it occasionally looks plague ridden doesn't mean it actually is

Pretty high crime there actually so I don't blame you. I once had my dirty laundry stolen out of the back of my truck there (stayed at a hotel & left the bag in the back) Really? Who steals dirty underwear?

That depends, are we talking yours or Jessica Alba's?

Not that I would steal either personally. Others may feel differently.

The crime there is bad. My brother-in-law is in chiropractic school there for one more year and once he is gone I will not be back. I can watch the cards in KC haha.

Me again. I keep thinking of questions. In regards to my last post, does anyone know what online retailers stock (when they can get it) SS198 that will sell it to a non-leo/military individual. I would like to find the places that do so I can get myself on the "notify me" list. Thanks!

That's a good question. It turns up here and there (and in the oddest places too). Cope's Distributing had some recently at a decent price - and sold out in a blink of an eye. Try GunBot or AmmoSeek to track some down. Of course GunBroker can be counted on to have numerous vendors offering it, just at ridiculous prices. You can try there to pick up a box or two if you're desperate enough.

Don't overlook local or regional gun forums - including this one! There's a gun forum I frequent that is local to my state that has a guy offering a significant amount of SS198 for $85 a box within easy driving distance from me. I haven't stooped to contacting him (since I can cheaply load my own ammo to significantly better specs) but as dumb as that price point is, it's actually competitive with GunBroker pricing (factoring in shipping vs driving over to pick it up). Think outside the box when you search.

Once again, this is all stop-gap until you can get something from EA. Sign up for EA's e-mails and keep an eye on their website. They occasionally manage to turn out small runs but you have to be on your toes and ready to rock the instant they notify. But that's true of all ammo vendors these days. :(

Thanks again. Gunbot actually led to me to Cope's, however it was sold out by the time I got the memo. I did subscribe to their email list to notify me when it becomes available. I did the same to EA. I have plenty of federal rounds, but with my fixed sights they seem to shoot way low and I don't much trust them on a coyote. I also have the same trouble with the 197's shooting low. I do feel confident in the 197 to stop a person if needed and a coyote when hunt them, but I'm just not satisfied with my point of aim. I figure the higher velocity of the 198 or some variant of elite would fix my dilemma.

That's going to be a major drawback to the fixed-sight versions of the FiveSeveN. Those sights are set for SS192/SS195, neither of which are in production any more. SS198 is actually apt to shoot slightly high, but not by enough to matter. I'm not sure what FNH's thinking is there - if they have discontinued SS195 and insist on restricting SS198 to LEO/Military, then what exactly is a civilian owner of a fixed-sight FSN supposed to do? Just hold over all the time? Be forced to reload?

My hope is that FNH *HAS* thought this through and is planning a successor to SS195 (SS199 anybody?) that will shoot straight from the fixed-sight FSN. Or perhaps Fiocchi/Federal/whoever are secretly working on a new load that will do so. Time will tell.

Don't worry I'm new too (my 1st post LOL!) When I got my FsN I was very concerned about non plinking ammo availability and SD ammo. Elite doesn't appear to be selling any 5.7 and Desert...something out of NV stopped taking any orders and cancelled mine placed a year ago. I ended up "biting the bullet" and used gunbroker auctions. All types of ammo were available but you had to pay a premium. I got a bag of EA 5.7 tracers (fun) several boxes of SS197SR (target) and a box of SS190 (CC/SHTF). As for "reasonably priced" well, that's a subjective term. I didn't mind paying $8/rd when I thought the SS190 was about to be banned and it would certainly suite the purpose of self defense. As for available ammo I'd check auction sites. I've been able to find a couple 50rd boxes of SS197SR at a couple local shops but its always a one box per visit thing that they keep in the back and don't advertise. I've yet to see the SS198 locally.

Man......$8/round......im fairly confident i would load my muzzleloader with rocks before i paid that haha. Then again, i have yet to get my hands on any. Ill probably break down to gunbroker eventually but for now im gonna just wait.

I hate to say this but the SS190 isn't going to be banned...auctions just say that to drive sales with fear. Also, 190 should not be your first choice for any SD.
