AR Five Seven Barrel Change?

Post by retrodog » 21 Apr 2011, 13:07

I originally bought an 11" upper for my SBR. It works great but I wanted to correct the length to add a tri-lug for a suppressor, so I got a 12" barrel from the company. Both barrels hav the nut end just behind the threading. What are the steps for switching out the barrels?

According to AR57center, it's held in place with red loctite and all you need to do is apply heat and torque. I couldn't do it, now it's at my gunsmith and they are struggling with it. I'm hoping that they will get it done this week, and I'll let you know what they say it required...

Finally heard back from the gunsmith. He said that it required quite a bit more heat than he expected and that a strap wrench was useless. He actually had to use a breaker bar to get the old barrel off.

I don't know if anyone else had a similar experience, but it sounds like these barrels can be challenging at best...

Well that's just great. I'm back from vacation and will have to figure out what I'm going to do about it. Sounds like it would have been better to just sell the 11" upper for a slight loss and then buy a 12" version.

I posted this same question here a couple months ago, for the same issue. I had an 11" upper but didn't have enough thread for my suppressor.
I ended up buying a used 12" upper at a decent price here, and just sold my 11". From the replies I got it just seemed like too much hassle to change the barrel, the design is not nearly as friendly as an AR15 upper for a barrel change.

My gunsmith did it....the company said the barrel was threaded 5/8"x24 but the barrel was 5/8"x18 when he removed it,,, :thumb:

How do you always end up with double image tags I8?

If you copy the code for forums & paste it here, you do not need to enclose it in another set of image [img] tags, The copied code has them included.

My gunsmith changed the barrel and I finally got my tax stamps for the SBR and suppressor. Yes, I am a total geek because I am a huge BSG fan, however... This is my rifle. There are many others (not) like it, but this one is mine!

I'll post a full review (video of course) in the NFA forum within a week, right after I shoot it.

No, but it does transform into this:

And when I take the safety off it moves into super-secret weapon mode (pic in the T&A thread):
