Joining The FN 57 Group

Post by miatank » 28 Mar 2010, 20:57

I've been interested in the 57 for a long time. This weekend I broke down and picked one up at the gun show. Can't wait to try it out. As a noob to this forum of course I have a few questions - got alot of info by searching, but...
OK, I like to reload and I plan to reload the 5.7. Will order some of the True Blue powder, already have HS-6 on hand.
Reading the reloading section it looks like people are using bullets from 28 to 55 gr. Is the pistol more accurate with one weight or another? Need to order bullets too.
In a like manner I saw everything from small pistol/spm to small rifle primers listed. I have a good supply of sp and some spm. Can I make some reasonable(not hot) loads using the sp primers?
The dealer mentioned the 10 round extension. Looked but missed a link to a vendor - can anyone point me to one?
Gotta say, the pistol box is like a small suitcase. Pain to store. The picture does not really show how big it is. EDIT: Sorry, the picture worked when I first posted, now it's gone. Trying something else.

Can't wait to try the 57 out!

Thank you for the link Rapier1772. When you're new, finding what is plain as day to everyone else can be a challenge.

Hello and welcome,

Being fairly new to loading/reloading I'm going to refrain from offering any advice there, but search, as you have, and check the 'forum wiki' in the upper left.

Others will help answer questions that you still have......they'll be along soon. :thumb:

Llagoud -
Searching is why I was wondering about bullet weight and primer type. Looking over the posts there did not seem to be a consensus. Some guns shoot best with one bullet weight, others shoot any bullet well - maybe the 57 is happy with any slug.
I've been reloading for a long time and for many of us the 'holy grail' is to find the very best load (accurate, powerfull, reliable) for a specific firearm. Sometimes it can be a matter of load what you got - got a 1,000 round bulk pack of bullet xyz and that's what I'm gonna use. Different goals perhaps, but it makes the hobby interesting.

dave - maybe there is no consensus

Your best bullet weight window for the 5.7 is 28gr to 40gr. Heavier work but aren't ideal. This is why we started making our own bullets.

Welcome!

Before you invest any more money in anything else, go break your FsN in. Make it worth ypur wild, no less than 300 rounds at the range is a good day, 500-700 rounds is a great day. Just think, then you will have plenty of brass to play with.

Good luck!

Great to have you join us! Not to disrespect anyone, but panz and grant have probably loaded more combinations in this caliber than the population of Delaware. For safety, pay close attention, PLEASE, to their advice in particular. As for extension, my personal advice is stay away. We have had numerous accounts in which they did not perform. For low cost, contact our guys with shops listed above and they can sell you a factory 30 round magazine which will work. Enjoy your new gun!

Thanks everyone for all the great information.
One follow-up question. There is a 'sticker' with a bar code near the ejection port on the top of the pistol. It seems to be held on with a serious adhesive. I think it looks dumb. Is it normal to remove this eye sore?

dave - bore cleaner might loosen it up

Take the sticker off. It serves no purpose and does not affect the function nor value of your pistol.

That's a stock control bar code sticker

Remove it.

Sorry for the n00b question but I don't see the "forum wiki" in the upper left? I'm viewing on a Mac notebook, could that be the problem?

Thanks,

Eric

I fixed it, I changed my setting to subsilver2. It disappeared, when I change the view back to black, it's there now.

I just forgot about updating subsilver to display the wiki/chat links. I'll do that later this evening.
