FMJs??
So I found some ammo at a range I usually don't go to and are ~$5 cheaper than FN's ammo, but they are FMJs. I guess I'm posting because I'm concerned about over penetration if do need to defend myself. Should I be concerned??

Re: FMJs??
It's really hard to say how much damage they would cause. I know that SS195 (which is what I shoot in my local indoor range) will penetrate further into a IIIA vest than AE TMJ rounds and I haven't been reprimanded. But soft body armor and range backstop material are not one in the same. I know that of the three, SS197 will cause the least amount of damage.Woozy Welder wrote:So I found some ammo at a range I usually don't go to and are ~$5 cheaper than FN's ammo, but they are FMJs. Has anybody shot SS195 and AE TMJ side by side into the same piece of steel?

Yes. Steel, and other things.ShockedNKansas wrote:It's really hard to say how much damage they would cause. Woozy, just check out Greenberg's videos, they'll give you a good point from which to springboard your thoughts.
Never attribute to malice that which can be explained by stupidity.
The shooter will always matter more than the gear ever will.
Stop relying on others to do the work for you.
Shoot more, worry less.

Re: FMJs??
I think the Federal AE is probably pretty similar to FN SS192, 195, 198 in it's damage profile....it should tumble just like those rounds do.
Re: FMJs??
except the TMJ is not much longer than SS197SR. We'd need high speed camera and gel to see if it tumbles

Re: FMJs??
That and it doesn't have the open tip so aside from hitting something inside the target and then being thrown off course, what is there to compel it to begin tumbling in the first place.Buffman wrote:except the TMJ is not much longer than SS197SR. Almost all spitzers tumble at some point, it's a matter of how long the neck is.Buffman wrote:except the TMJ is not much longer than SS197SR. We'd need high speed camera and gel to see if it tumbles
Generally, the farther aft of CG the balance point of the bullet is, the faster it will begin to yaw/tumble.
I have a 40gr TMJ pulled bullet about 10 feet away from me. I guess i could always get out my micrometer and measure it. If i knew where i put my mic. lol.
The open tip of the 28gr FN OTM bullet (SS192/5/8) has nothing to do with why it tumbles. Spitzers tumble because tissue is dozens of times more dense than air, so when the bullet penetrates it becomes unstable as it's center of gravity tries to "right itself", which causes the bullet to yaw.
All non expanding spitzers yaw. Its just a matter of how long the 'wound neck' is, ie, how long after penetration does it take the bullet to yaw.
