Excuss my ignorance.

Did the assault weapon ban actually ban handguns with mags over 10 rounds? Or is the media just screwing this up again?

Thanks-Mike

It restricted mags over 10 rounds to LEO/Military only. You could still get the handguns but no mags over 10 rounds came with the guns. All hi-cap pistol mags that shipped from the factory with pistols some how managed to vanish and turn into 10 round mags. :)

That law sucked!

More accurately, the law prevented the new manufacture of hi-cap magazines sold to the public. Whatever was made before the law took effect was legal to sell, but no more could be made.

The law didn't lessen the number of hi-cap magazines in the slightest. There are tens of millions out there. What it did do was to allow scalpers to ask $100 for a magazine that a week earlier went for $10.

After all the initial panic subsided, the prices settled down to about 50% more than what they were pre-ban.

Ironically, the prices have stayed steady since the ban sunsetted.

That didn't happen around here till the ban expired.

In some cases it did slightly, by two rounds. The Sig 229 was released just prior to the ban and only a very few 12 round mags were released. Once the ban started you could not find the mags and if you did they were very high priced.

Before the Brady Ban, I was able to pick up Surplus Colt manufactured 20 round AR mags for $18 a piece, with the origional aluminum follower. 2 years after the ban they were down to $25. I find them today between $20 and $30.

30 round surplus AR mags were $15-$20, went as high as $50, then settled down to $20-$25. They are still in that range.

Orlite magazines went from $10 to $30, then back down to $15 where they remain today.

Thermold went from $15 to $80, then down to $25. Thermold is no longer in business, but Pro-Mag bought their molds and makes the same mag. I find them for $20 - $25.

Pistol mags saw the highest increase. AR and AK mags were only temporarily affected as people did panic-buying. Some of the scuzzyest dealers (the ones who are today claiming the Five-seveN and ammo are about to be banned) tried to jack up the price of everything, but eventually went with the flow.

I know that in CA just before the CA ban went into affect, scalpers were selling AR and AK mags for as much as $200 a piece. I made a killing having bought 2,000 of them surplus for about $.48 a piece, and then reselling them at an LA County gunshow for $50. I sold out in 3 hours. Other dealers were really pissed at me, as I was undercutting them by 75%. I just couldn't look myself in the eye if I had charged like they had.

After the buying frenzy on my surplus mags, I sold off my new thermold for $75 a piece (I paid $22), then my Orlite Israeli for $60 (I paid $10). All said and done, I sold more than 5200 mags in 6 hours. As I was leaving that evening, there was a collective sigh of relief from the scalpers. Just to screw with them, I said I'd be back the next morning with another 10k surplus mags that my wife was bringing in... I got there in the morning with some semi-collectable ammo and paraphenelia.. As I walked in, the room got tense, and I noticed that the scalpers had adjusted their prices to be similiar to mine. Just to screw with them, I put a sign up listing my prices, and attached a hand-written note that my reserve supply of mags would be delivered any time.. I played it out all day. :D I never did have any more, but at least it kept the prices somewhat sane in that show.

On the way out to my truck I was accosted by several of the magazine scalpers.. It got ugly and two of them went to jail for assaulting a peace officer (me).
