View Full Version : Got the answer for boat tail

Just got off the phone with Western Powders. Talked with top tech in the ballistics lab. The answer to the question, "way they do not recommend boat tail bullets in the reloading of the 5.7 X 28 mm (especially in the pistol)". Is... drum roll!!! "Exessive bullet upset" . He said, "they would sometimes have a 5" group at 15' ". "Shot out of a 5" barrol". "All test were performed with a fixed reciever." He did state that, "it may be their method." "That some other labs have proved different results." Has anybody done any accurancy testing with the BT that can back up this info or not? I know I will be doing some test this week and will post results. I also have a laser on mine which will nagate the eye blur factor. He also stated that "there is no saftey issue with their recommendation." "The only saftey issue with the boat tail being shot out of the pistol is missing your target." Any thoughts H&H

Any thoughts
You can look through the reloading section. A lot of the data uses boat tail bullets and no one seems to have a problem with them. This thread, as was pointed out to you before.

That's what I told him. Thats when he said their method may be different from others. Just quoting the company that stated the recommendation.

They need to go back and do some more testing, or call MO.

They have to take the blindfold off the old lady. Just shot 2, 5 shot groups. Both at 10 yds, Sandbagged, with laser sight.

4 shot brass
AA#7 7.7gr
40 gr BOAT TAIL Horn
no crimp
COL 1.585

Results: outer to outer
group #1 = .450"
group #2 = .400"

Note: Had a double ringer in group # 1 and a tripple ringer in #2

Sounds like a case of blatant anti-boattal bigotry to me. I am now going to happily reload some of the 40 grain V-max I bought last week.

The bt's are easier to load, anyway. I suspect that is why FN used them in the first place. Its not like any one is going to shoot their 5.7 at a distance where the boattail bullet would have a positive effect.

I don't want to load any thing but B-tails.
I loaded tons of 40gr ballistic tip boat tails. The bullet feeds into the case so easy. I also load 33gr Speer TNT HP's. They are a little harder to load because there not boat tail. But their so fun to shoot. They are the dream plinking round for the fiveseven I think.
The only non boat tail I will load is the TNT.
The fiveseven has like a 9 inch to 1 twist, that should stabilize 62gr boat tails.

It stabilizes 60grn Nosler trophy gold bullets all day long :)

I even get a reasonable velocity with them too (1300+ fps / mild load)
